WHIO Feature on Teen Auto Related Deaths Features Darke County Parents

WHIO's James Brown put together a feature (click on the image below to watch) on the recent string of auto accidents that have claimed a total of 7 lives of teenagers in the Miami Valley. This includes three teens from Darke County, who are part of a seemingly large number of auto fatalities in general this year in Darke County.

The video features Larry and Michelle Mendenhall, parents of Brian Mendenhall, one of three teens who died in an accident on Byrket Road. They speak openly about losing their son and the regret and guilt they now have to deal with, which is heartbreaking to any parent.

The video also features the mother of a girl who died in a crash from Bellbrook, as well as several others speaking out about how parents can help prevent these types of accidents from happening to their teens.

Brown also adds at the end of the story that Darke County Officers have determined that the car Mendenhall was riding in was traveling approximately 90 miles per hour at the time of the crash.

Parents and teens, take a few minutes and watch the video. It's extremely easy for us to detach ourselves from very real dangers such as this. Let's allow this to be an opportunity to wake ourselves from the "it won't happen to me" notion that we all feel and place ourselves in the shoes of those who are currently dealing with tragedy.
