Greenville FFA Holds Annual FFA Banquet

The Greenville FFA Chapter celebrated its many accomplishments, both as a chapter and by its individual members, during the 83rd Annual FFA Recognition Night held on Thursday, March 11th. Approximately 225 members, parents and guests attended the evening held at Greenville High School.

Special guest speakers for the banquet were Carly Snider, Ohio District 9 FFA President and Allen Keaser, President of the Greenville FFA Alumni.

Six members received “Star” Awards. They were: Star Greenhand Degree, Olivia McDade; Star in Agriscience, Thomas Shaw; Star in Ag Placement, Colton Sherry; and Star in Agribusiness, Alyssa Garber.

The Chapter recognized retired advisor Mr Daryl Goodwin for all his hard work and dedication during all of his years of service. Mr. Goodwin was presented the Outstanding Advisor Award.

Six outstanding awards were given out to members. They were: Outstanding Freshman, Dylan Kolb and Olivia McDade; Outstanding Sophomore, Korey Garland; Outstanding Junior, Patrick Garber and Emily Vanhorn; and Senior outstanding, Alyssa Garber.

The chapter awarded two honorary memberships. The Honorary Chapter Degrees were presented to Mr. and Mrs. Jim and Luann Mann. Thank you for all of your dedication to the future of agriculture.


The other awards and recognition presented throughout the evening included Top 5 Citrus Salesmen were first place, Thomas Shaw with $1082.00 in sales. In second place was Alyssa Garber with a total sale of $865.00. Third place was Patrick Garber with $710.00 in citrus sales. In 4th place was Jalena LeMaster with a total sale of $651.00 and in 5th place with a total sale of $622.50 was Kyle Huston. Alyssa Garber was named the Top Citrus Salesman Career Four-Year Total with $3,119.50 in total sales.

Other Fruit Sales Award winners with sales of at least $ 250.00 of citrus were Catherine Gibson, Kiara Davidson, Madison Schatz, Kelsey Crandall, Aaron Miniard, Jena Snyder, and Olivia McDade.

With at least $400.00 in Sales were Brooke Stebbins, Patrick Schmitmeyer, Sheiann Mead, Emily Vanhorn, Tim Ball, Judge Welbaum, Victoria Nadar, Jake Pabst, Kyle Warren, and Korey Garland.

Scholarship Awards presented by Advisor John Guttadore were awarded to Senior, Alyssa Garber;

Junior, Patrick Garber; Sophomore, Korey Garland; and Freshman, Victoria Nadar.

Plugger Awards were given to Kiara Davidson, Rachael Schmitmeyer, and Kelsey Crandall. Tim Ball was also recognized for playing in the State FFA Band at the 84th State FFA Convention in 2012

Judging Contest recognition certificates were given to the following teams. The Agronomy Team placing 4th in the state consisted of Regan Garber, Patrick Garber, and Alyssa Garber. The Rural Soils Team consisted of Emily Vanhorn, Patrick Garber, Thomas Shaw, Kyle Huston, and Catherine Gibson who made it to the state contest. The Dairy Judging Team placing 7th in the state consisted of Emily Vanhorn, Courtney Overton, Rachael Schmitmeyer, and Thomas Shaw. Thomas placed 6th overall individual. The Equine Science Team placing 8th in the state consisted of Sara Cole, Sheiann Mead, Rachel Bolyard, Madison Schatz, and Kiara Davidosn. The Wildlife Management team placed in to the top 20 at the state completion, the team included, Kyle Huston and Trever Mann. In the Job Interview, in the Freshman Contest, Dylan Kolb; in the Sophomore Contest, Ryan Ramsey; in the Junior Contest, Thomas Shaw’; and in the Senior Contest, Alyssa Garber , were honored. Thomas placed 1st in the district and moved on to the state completion. In the Public Speaking area, Thomas Shaw competed in the Extemporaneous Public Speaking contest where he received a gold rating and placed 3rd at county completion. Victoria Nadar and Olivia McDade competed in the creed contest where each received a gold rating as well. Olivia moved on to district completion and placed in the top 5. The Tractor Trouble shooting team was recognized for placing 5th at the district contest, member include, Patrick Schmitmeyer and Brady Garber. The Southwestern Skills Classic Team placed 4th in the state contest. Team members were, Tim Ball 1st overall, Austin Davis, Wyatt Shaerp, and Jessica Landis. The chapter Parliamentary Procedure Team competed in the county contest. The teams received a gold rating, member were: Patrick Garber, Thomas Shaw, Rachael Schmitmeyer, Jalena LeMaster, Sheiann Mead, Emily Vanhorn, and Ciara Byrd. The chapter had two Greenhand Parliamentary Procedure contest. Members who competed were: Kelsey Crandall, Ryan Ramsey, Spencer Monnin, Judge Welbaun, Daniel Cline, Olivia McDade, Aaron Miniard, Sam Ball, Brady Garber, Bradley Garber, Victoria Nader, Kamryn Coppock, Dylan Kolb, Nicole Garland, and Hannah Smith.

Awards presented by Advisor John Guttadore for the proficiency awards were: Thomas Shaw, chapter winner in Agricultural Communications placed top in District 5 and was named a state finalist as well; Trever Mann, chapter winner in Beef Production; Emily Vanhorn, chapter winner in Beef Production Placement; Thomas Shaw was chapter winner in Dairy Production Entrepreneurship; Rachael Schmitmeyer, chapter winner in Dairy Production Placement; Patrick Garber chapter winner in Diversified Crop Production; the chapter winner in Diversified Horticulture Placement was Jalena LeMaster; Patrick Garber chapter winner in Fiber/ Oil Crop Production Entrepreneurship; our chapter winnners in the Food Science and Technology Placement were Molly Magato and Courtney Overton; in Forage Production Placement chapter winner Kyle Huston; Jalena LeMaster received chapter winner in Landscape Management Placement and also receiving a chapter winning proficiency in Nursery Operations Placement; Sarah Garland, Sheiann Mead and Thomas Shaw received the Poultry Production Entrepreneurship proficiency on the chapter level. In the Poultry Production Placement area, Alyssa Garber won the chapter proficiency. Korey Garland and Brooke Stebbins won the Swine Production Entrepreneurship at the chapter level. Alyssa Garber won the chapter proficiency area in Veterinary Medicine Placement.

Officer Achievements were recognized; Secretary’s Silver Award to Kiara Davidson; Reporter’s Gold Award to Emily Vanhorn, and the Treasurer’s Sliver Award to Catherine Gibson. Emily will be recognized at the State FFA Convention in May.

The Four Year Award went to Brooke Stebbins, Jon Unger, Eric Bankson, Colton Sherry, Dakota Edger, Molly Magato, and Alyssa Garber.

The advisors presented Appreciation Plaque was presented to Rick Drew of Drew Trucking and Denise McDade.

It was announced that the 2013 State Degree Candidates were Alyssa Garber, Patrick Garber and Thomas Shaw.

Some of the chapter achievements for the Greenville FFA over this past year in terms of community service included Collecting Pop Tabs for Ronald McDonald House, Participating In Adopt A Highway Program for the 23rd year, Collected over 150 toys for Toys for Tots, Collected over 500 canned Goods for the Needy At Christmas, Collected over 500 pounds of pet food for Humane Society, Collected 33 Operation Christmas Child Boxes, Sponsored a Blood Drive at Greenville High School collecting 54 pints of blood, Raised Over $600.00 for Darke County March Dimes WalkAmerica, Raised $100.00 for March of Dimes with Student Hat for Babies Day, and Raised $200.00 for Children’s Hospital with the FFA Week ‘Kiss the Pig Contest’.

Special thanks were given to Denise McDade and her serving staff for preparing the food, serving, and cleaning up. Also, a thank you went out to all the FFA members, guests, parents, and alumni who supported and donated items to our first annual pie and cake silent auction which rose over $300.00. The proceeds go to help fund and support FFA activities that the chapter is involved in over the course of the year.
