Help a Local Family Battling Cancer

The following was submitted by a Versailles' couple to spread awareness of their daughter-in-law's struggle with cancer and the rising costs of care. She is moving to Ohio soon to start a new treatment, and a few fundraisers will be held throughout summer to help with the costs. Give the following a read, then dry your eyes and consider helping, even if it's just sending thoughts and prayers... - John L

Lauren and Lily
Hi! My name is Lily and I will be 6 years old on my birthday this year. My Papaw says I am “as sharp as a whip.” I don’t know what that means. What I do know is that the doctors have told my mommy that she has cancer (that’s her [Lauren] in the picture having fun with me). They call the cancer Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma, really big words for such a little girl, right? But when you’ve lived around it as long as I have, you pick up a few things. CTCL, or just “the cancer” is what we call it for short. It makes mommy’s skin itch and burn, sometimes she is in a lot of pain, and she hardly ever gets very much sleep. I heard somebody say, “It’s like poison ivy on steroids with a really bad sunburn on top of it.” It’s all over her body so I even have to be careful when I hug her so I don’t make her hurt even more. Every night I pray that God would heal mommy and make her all better. Mommy says that when He does maybe then I can have a baby brother or sister. I would really like that!

Daddy and mommy have been to see a lot of doctors. Some of the things they have done seem to help for a little while, but the doctors say there is no cure for the type of cancer mommy has. The medicine the doctors use for other people with CTCL only seemed to make mommy feel worse. They say “the cancer” mommy has is very… “aggressive”. So, just the other week we all went together with Grandpa and Grandma, and Papaw and Nana to see a new doctor in Ohio. This doctor helps people that other doctors can’t. She said she couldn’t heal mommy’s cancer, only God could do that, but she could help mommy feel better and kill that nasty cancer. She said she thought mommy should let her start helping her get better right away. But I think mommy and daddy are… “anxious” about how they are going to pay the doctor to help us. I told them they could have the money in my piggy-bank, but they didn’t think that would be enough to help very much.

I know mommies and daddies and grandmas and grandpas know more than just a little girl like me. But I think sometimes as they get older they forget the very things they teach us when we are little. One of the favorite cartoons I used to watch when I would stay over at Nana and Papaw’s house was ‘Wonder-Pets’. I can still remember every time one of their friends would get in trouble they would all sing this song and then go to their rescue:

“The phone. The phone is ringing.
The phone. We'll be right there.
The phone. The phone is ringing.
There's an animal in trouble.
There's an animal in trouble.
There's an animal in trouble somewhere.

“Wonder Pets! Wonder Pets! We're on our way
To help a friend, And save the day
We're not too big, And we're not too tough
But when we work together, We've got the right stuff
Go, Wonder Pets, ya'ay!”

Teamwork always worked for the Wonder Pets. I’ll bet it will work for us too. If all of us joined together, I know we can get enough money so the doctors can start helping mommy. Even if we each can only do a little bit. Daddy says I’m a real math whiz! I am just now getting good at adding and subtracting. He says when I learn to ‘multiply’ the numbers get a whole lot bigger, a whole lot faster. I think that means if we will all work together, we can ‘multiply’ the effects and the little bit we each have can become a lot in a hurry!

Do you “have the right stuff” to help us? Because we would like to share a whole lot more birthdays together having fun!
