AREA HIGH SCHOOLS HONORED FOR BLOOD DRIVE EXCELLENCE

CBC BEGINS NEW SCHOOL YEAR BY AWARDING $5,000 IN GRANTS

Community Blood Center (CBC) is launching the new year of high school blood drives by recognizing the highest achieving schools in blood drive support from 2012-13. The top-ranked schools in five categories are the first to share a $5,000 award from the inaugural CBC High School Leadership Grant Program for Blood Drive Excellence.

Emmanuel Christian Academy in Springfield is one of the smallest schools hosting CBC blood drives, but dominated the grant competition by winning two awards. Butler Tech in Hamilton was the highest achieving school overall with the most donors in the 2012-13 academic year. Neighboring Hamilton High School and Union City’s Mississinawa Valley High School also earned $1,000 awards for growth in blood drive participation.

“We congratulate the winners and thank all our high schools, especially those eligible for the grant program by hosting at least two blood drives a year,” said CBC Donor Relations Director Andrew Keelor. “We value every one of these partnerships, and we continue to be amazed by these students. We’re also grateful to the principals, teachers and parents. They allow students to take time away from class to donate so they can gain a valuable lesson in community service.”

High School Leadership Grant winners by category:

  • Most Donors in the Academic Year: Butler Tech - Butler Tech is CBC’s most active high school supporter with six blood drives held during the school year. In 2012-13 Butler Tech registered 532 donors and collected 382 donations.
  • Most Improved: Hamilton High School – Hamilton High School has the highest number of eligible student donors among CBC blood drive schools. HSS resumed a two-blood drive schedule in 2012-13 and saw an 83% increase in blood donor registration.
  • Highest Percentage of Enrollment: Emmanuel Christian Academy – ECA has a small number of eligible donors, but their enthusiastic support for the two blood drives ECA hosted in 2012-13 resulted in participation by 137% of enrollment.
  • 2nd Highest Percentage of Enrollment: Mississinawa Valley High School – CBC awards grants for first place and runner-up in this category. Mississinawa Valley students strongly supported the four blood drives they hosted in 2012-13, resulting in participation by 132% of enrollment.
  • Red Cord Excellence: Emmanuel Christian Academy – CBC awards a grant to the school with the highest percentage of eligible donors who qualify for the CBC Red Cord Honor Program. (Students must register to donate at least three times during their high school career to earn a Red Cord to be worn at honor recognition ceremonies and graduation). ECA earned a second CBC grant with 70 percent of eligible donors qualifying for Red Cord.

Additional CBC high school recognition and reward programs:
The CBC/Vectren Creative Scholarship Program for High School Seniors: This $5,000 scholarship program is supported by a grant from the Vectren Foundation. CBC and Vectren annually award $1,000 in college tuition assistance to five graduating, college-bound seniors whose high school hosts a CBC blood drive. Scholarship applicants are challenged to imagine themselves as leaders of their high school blood drive as they design a winning blood drive marketing campaign. They must create a theme they believe will be effective in encouraging students to donate and creatively express the theme using conventional marketing techniques or innovative, artistic expressions. The application deadline is April 20. Examples of winning campaigns and the 2013-14 application are available at www.GivingBlood.org.

The Red Cord Honor Program – Students are automatically enrolled in the program when the register to donate at their Red Cord Honor Program participating high school. They must register to donate at least three times during their high school career to earn a Red Cord, which can be worn at high school honor recognition ceremonies and graduation. Seniors have until May 15 (or by the date of their school’s final blood drive if it is after May 15) to complete the requirement.
