Reading Buddies Make a Difference for You and a Child

Reading Buddy Jim is spending time with children to help make them lifetime learners!

Need a New Year’s Resolution – resolve to read with kids and help them move towards a better future. Reading Buddies”: is a volunteer program used by Kids Learning Place Education and Child Care Centers that places community volunteers that commit to read with children in the local Head Start and preschool rooms. By reading regularly with children in the “Reading Buddies” program you will be investing in children and families, and helping them become better readers and students in the future.

Reading is the cornerstone of all learning for children and sadly research shows only about 53% of children aged 3 to 5 are read to by family members. Even reading a few pages helps young children learn new words, phrases and strengthens their grammar. Did you know that at-risk children beginning the first grade might only have a vocabulary that is approximately half of the other students?

What is required to be a Reading Buddy”?

  • Commit to volunteer a minimum of one visit per week – but you can schedule any amount of time with the classroom teacher after you begin.
  • You must like working with young children aged 3 – 5 years.
  • Prior experience with reading stories aloud is helpful, but not necessary. We provide training so that you will have the skills you need - we won’t send you out until you are not only competent, but confident.
  • Be 18 or older and have transportation to the local preschool/Head Start center.
  • Must be willing to have a background check (provided free) and a physical form completed by your doctor; we treasure our youngest patrons and want to ensue in their best interests.

If you live in Darke County and love being with children this program could be just right for you. The Kids Learning Place centers are located in Greenville, Bradford and Union City. Research shows that the sooner a child can develop a love of reading the better; and YOU can be that person to help these young children learn to read for a brighter future
