MVCTC Students Qualify for National BPA Contests

Clayton, Ohio – The Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) Business Professionals of America (BPA) chapter competed in the State BPA Conference on Thursday and Friday, March 13 and 14, 2014, in Columbus, Ohio.

Congratulations to Zach Arnould and Tearza Callahan for placing first in their State BPA Contest. Zach, a Computer Repair & Technical Support student from Miamisburg, won the PC Servicing & Troubleshooting Contest; Tearza, a Legal Assistant student from Preble Shawnee, won the Legal Office Procedures Contest.

Congratulations to Spencer Haney and Emily Weaver for also qualifying for the National BPA Contest. Spencer, a Computer Technology Acacemy student from Brookville, placed third in the JAVA Programming contest; Emily, a Business Academy student from Franklin Monroe, placed third in the Advanced Word Processing contest. Zach, Tearza, Spencer, and Emily will all compete at the National BPA Contest in Indianapolis, IN in May.

The following students placed in the top ten in their State BPA Contest:

  • Shelbie Ballard (Legal Assistant student from Brookville) placed 7th in the BPA State Advanced Word Processing Contest.
  • Harley Billhimer (Sports Marketing student from West Carrollton) placed 4th in the BPA State Digital Design with InDesign - Pilot Contest.
  • Samantha Denlinger (Legal Assistant student from Miami East) placed 4th in the BPA State Legal Office Procedures Contest.
  • Rachel Knobloch (Medical Office Management student from Northmont) placed 9th in the BPA State Medical Office Procedures Contest.
  • Aaron Lockard (Business Ownership student from Wayne) placed 4th in the BPA State Accounting Using Quickbooks Contest.
  • Raymond McDermott (GIS & Technical Intelligence student from Milton Union) placed 9th in the BPA State Database Applications Contest.
  • Tori Minnich (Business Academy student from Versailles) placed 3rd in the BPA State Payroll Accounting Contest.
  • Cody Phipps (Wayne - Satellite student) placed 5th in the BPA State Fundamental Word Processing Skills Contest.
  • The Network Design Team of Ryan Bright (Computer Network Engineering student from Tri-Village) and William Rice (Computer Network Engineering student from Milton Union) placed 10th in the BPA State Network Design Team Contest.
  • The Video Production Team of Colton Puterbaugh (Media & Video Production student from Tri Village), Ransome Rowland (Media & Video Production student from West Carrollton), and Garrett Rehmert (Media & Video Production student from Vandalia Butler) placed 5th in the BPA State Video Production Team Contest.


MVCTC students, Tearza Callahan (Twin Valley South) and Emily Weaver (Franklin Monroe) also were awarded scholarships to the University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH). UNOH offers scholarships to the top three finishers in several BPA events. Tearza will receive a $3,000 scholarship for her first place finish and Emily will receive a $2,000 scholarship for her third place finish.

Also at the BPA State Conference, MVCTC Enrollment Coordinator and past BPA Advisor, Mrs. Kelly Haws, was awarded the Honorary Life Membership Award in BPA.

BPA is a national student organization that serves Business and Information Technology students. Members participate in activities that promote leadership, citizenship, academic, and technological skills, as well as competing in BPA contests related to their career field at the local, regional, state, and national levels.
