Farm Safety at Darke County Ag Day

Youth attending the Darke County Ag Day will learn about farm safety on Tuesday, June 10 starting at 9:00 a.m. Nick Brumfield, Cargill Outreach Coordinator, will be teaching youth about proper animal safety including how to approach them and what to wear while around them.

According to the National Safety Council, agriculture is the nation’s most dangerous industry. Between 1995 and 2000, nearly 700 youth died on farms and ranches in the United States, according to the 2004 Journal of Safety Research..

“Farming can be fun for the whole family,” said Brumfield. “as long as everybody knows the risks involved and how to keep themselves safe.”

Brumfield partners with Farm Safety For Just Kids to offer safety education for youth. Farm Safety For Just Kids was founded 25 years ago by an Iowa farm wife after the death of her son in a gravity flow grain wagon accident. The organization promotes a safe farm environment to prevent injuries and death by educating our youth.

Cargill sponsors Brumfield’s position in addition to outreach coordinators in Kansas and Indiana.

“Cargill is proud of our 25 year relationship with Farm Safety For Just Kids,” said Fred Oelschlaeger, Farm Service Group leader with Cargill AgHorizons.” We greatly appreciate the opportunity to work with Farm Safety For Just Kids to help keep our most valuable resource – our kids – safe on the family farm.”
