Heart Association grant to fund Reid heart healthy cooking program

An American Heart Association grant will fund a new heart-healthy cooking program for Wayne County viewers on Whitewater Community Television. The one-year Community Innovation Grant from the American Heart Association for 2014-2015 is designed to help achieve the American Heart Association’s mission: to build healthier lives, free from cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

Reid is one of 28 grant recipients out of a total of 152 applicants across an 11-state region served by the American Heart Association’s Midwest Affiliate. Reid received $4960 to support Reid’s “I Heart Cooking,” a 30-minute Heart Healthy monthly cooking class.

These cooking classes will be led by a Reid registered dietitian and a chef. The classes will be held at the Richmond Power & Light headquarters in Richmond using their fully-equipped test kitchen. Each class will be filmed by WCTV and will then later air on WETV Channel 20. Various community groups will be invited to attend the tapings as audience members each month.

Audience members will receive materials about heart healthy living, recipes and will be entered in a drawing for the most recent edition of the American Heart Association’s Cookbook. The audience will be able to join in a question and answer session at each taping about nutrition and cook preparation techniques.

Craig Kinyon, Reid President/CEO said, “We are delighted to receive this funding from the American Heart Association, which will enable us to educate people about how to live a healthy life and improve the heart health of our community.”
