Reid Rock Steady Boxing celebrates a year helping fight Parkinson’s
Reid Rock Steady Boxing, an exercise program designed to help people with Parkinson’s, recently celebrated its one-year birthday with a party for participants.
Brian Steele, Sports Health Manager, said this unique program has involved over 50 individuals with Parkinson’s. Most of the individuals that have been assessed have decided to join the boxing classes and are coming in up to three days a week for the 90-minute sessions. “Reid Neurology and other physicians have been very supportive of this program,” Steele said. “We are starting to see individuals within weeks of their diagnosis which will help them delay the effects of the disease.
“All of the metrics for our boxers have shown improvement,” Steele said.
The classes focus on overall fitness, with non-contact workouts that include ring work, punching bags, jump rope drills, calisthenics and weight training designed to address the specific symptoms of Parkinson’s.
Steele said the program continues to get rave reviews from participants, many of whom have found it helps with their symptoms including tremors, muscle rigidity and other challenges that come with the disease.
