Substance-Abuse-Mental Health Symposium set May 26 at Reid

A Substance Abuse and Mental Health Symposium is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, in Lingle Auditorium at Reid.

Lisa Suttle, Director of Reid Psychiatric Services, said the event will bring together caregivers and addiction experts to talk about community issues surrounding substance abuse. “We know that substance abuse is a growing problem for our region,” Suttle said. “This event aims to bring various groups together and share information and resources as we all try to address the challenges this brings to our community.”

Presentations will include:

  • “Substance Abuse and Mental Health,” by Dr. Akbar Shinwari, Reid Psychiatric Associates.
  • “Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome,” by Lacrisha Whitley, RN, Reid Mother-Baby Care Center.
  • “Adolescent Substance Abuse and Mental Health,” by Dr. Percy Mitchell, Wernle Youth & Family Treatment Center.
  • “Adult Substance Abuse and Mental Health,” by Luke Mohr, Richmond Treatment Center.
  • “Sharing My Story”, by Jonathan Fonzer, recovering addict.
  • A panel discussion about community resources.
  • And a variety of booths with resource information.

The event is underwritten by Reid Community Benefit. Lunch will be provided. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Call by May 18: (765) 935-8575.
