Greenville Represented at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

World Bicycle Relief Challenge at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.


For the 2nd time ever a bicycle race was held on the racetrack at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. After ten years of negotiation by Greenville’s Rocketship Sports Management, The Indianapolis Motor Speedway approved a limited event in 2014 and based upon the success permitted an unlimited race for 2015. The World Bicycle Relief Challenge is a multi-distance timed bike race that takes place on the famed racetrack. Riders have options of varying distances including 40k individual, 40k team, 100 mile open and a single 2.5 mile Brickyard hotlaps .

The event kicked off on Friday evening of Fathers day weekend with the Tour de Sram gala at the SRAM manufacturing facility in Indianapolis. Much like 2014, the event featured Zipp Speed Weaponry factory tours, a silent auction, casino, food trucks, Sun King and bicycle games. Special guests included 2015 Indianapolis 500 winner Juan Pablo Montoya and 2015 Indy Rookie of the year Gabby Chavez.

On Saturday, World Bicycle Relief competition included Mayor Greg Ballard, Indycar rookie Gabby Chavez and Novo Norodisc pro racers with diabetes. Riders of all shapes, sizes, ages and speeds took part in racing and raising money for two worthwhile causes.

Dr Robb Maher of Greenville was 2nd in his highly competitive 45-49 age group riding 100 miles in 4 hours and 55 minutes.

Dr. Safet Hatic of Greenville was 1st in his classification riding 100 miles in 5 hours and 5 minutes. Safet was also the 5th largest fundraiser for the event out of the 1262 participants.

Combined the event is expected to reach the $700,000 fundraising goal by the July 31 deadline.

World Bicycle Relief is a charity that provides bicycles to individuals in developing nations. The bicycles know as Buffalos are utility machines that multiply an individuals efficiency by increasing carrying capacity and accessible travel distance while decreasing the time it takes to commute to schools, clinics and markets. www.worldbicyclerelief.org

Rocketship Sports Management is an all-volunteer 501c3 not for profit amateur sports corporation based in Greenville Ohio. The group provides community fitness activities, supports other non-profits in fund raising through event support and organizes The Tour de Donut, Shawshank Hustle, Grand Lake Marathon, Donut Dash, World Bicycle Relief Challenge, Real American Challenge, Jump the Shark Grand Prix and Colavita-Zipp Time Trial Series.
