Piqua Civic Band Concert Season Begins with a Salute to “America!”


The Piqua Civic Band kicks off its summer season on July 4 at 2:00 p.m. as part of Piqua’s Fourth of July festivities. The concert entitled “America!” will filled with patriotic favorites by some of our country’s greatest composers. Tenor Gregory Ashe from the Michigan Opera Theatre will be the band’s featured soloist for the afternoon. Selections will include A Tribute to Irving Berlin, You’re a Grand Old Flag, Armed Forces Salute, God Bless the U.S.A., A Patriotic Sing-Along, and many more!

Gregory Ashe is a Bowling Green State University graduate with a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance degree music.  He is a light lyric tenor with an expressive timbre and color. He has sung many roles at Bowling Green State University and throughout the United States and abroad. He was part of OperaWorks Emerging Artist Program, where he was selected out of 300 auditioned singers.  Mr. Ashe was also part of Cincinnati Opera's Young artist program as Sportin' Life in Porgy and Bess: Redux, and also featured in the opera Buffalo Soldier with the International Opera Theater of Philadelphia. He was also the tenor soloist in Handel’s Messiah with the Masterworks Chorale of Toledo.

The band’s season will continue throughout July and into August on Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in Piqua’s Historic Hance Pavilion, located in Fountain Park. July 13’s concert features music from Great Britain as “The British are Coming.” “It’s a Grand Night for Singing” on July 20 as the band is joined by two guest vocalists to salute great songs of the 20th century. On July 27, the band explores the music of “Heroes” both super and everyday. Finally, the summer season will conclude on August 3 with a concert of “Classical Music (For People Who Hate Classical Music).
