Family Outdoor Nature Discovery program at Shawnee Prairie

Darke County Parks are proud to offer a new monthly series, called Family Outdoor Nature Discovery (F.O.N.D.). F.O.N.D. is a timely opportunity for families to engage in unstructured and purposeful outdoor play in our parks. Our Naturalists will provide the tools and locations for kids and their parents to explore whatever nature provides each month.

It’s no secret that we all have way too much screen time. According to Scott D. Sampson, author of How to Raise a Wild Child, “The average North American child now spends about seven hours a day staring at screens and mere minutes engaged in unstructured play outdoors, a dramatic transformation within the past generation. Yet recent research indicates that experiences in nature are essential for healthy growth. Regular exposure to nature can help relieve stress, depression, and attention deficits. It can reduce bullying, combat obesity, and boost academic scores.”

Beginning at the Nature Center at 1pm on August 19th your family will be prepared to venture onto the trails to explore the topic of the month whether it is wetland discovery or fort building! No fee or registration is required, but please be sure to dress for the weather and bring a water bottle. Programs will be held outdoors in all but the most extreme weather conditions. Join us and get outdoors to discover the nature in your backyard!

For more information please contact the Nature Center at (937) 548-0165 or email info@darkecountyparks.org.
