Longtown’s Memorial Day Ceremony Can Be Seen on YouTube


Fort GreeneVille Chapter held a gravesite dedication for American Revolutionary War soldier Benjamin Williams during Longtown’s annual Memorial Day ceremony. The Memorial Day ceremony was held at Clemens Cemetery on Hollansburg-Tampico Road in Liberty Township, Darke County, Ohio. Longtown descendant Robin Baker had the honors of laying of the flowers.

Benjamin Williams was a Private in the Maryland Militia during the American Revolutionary War. He served three years. Williams was at the Siege of Yorktown and assisted in the capturing of Cornwallis’ Army in 1781.

The Memorial Day ceremony was led by Hollansburg American Legion Post 708 Commander Eric O’Dell. Also participating in the ceremony were Liberty Township Trustees Mike Foreman, Curtis Hiatt and Scott Brewer, Hollansburg American Legion Post 708, New Madison American Legion Post 245, Boy Scouts Troop 96, Chaplain Pam Giese and Tri-Village marching band.

Historical Longtown was established nearly 200 years ago near Greenville. The settlement grew into a thriving mixed-race community and a major stop on the Underground Railroad.
