Senator Gary Cates to speak in Greenville

Ohio State Senator Gary Cates will be the speaker for the Darke County Republican Women’s Club meeting on Monday, April 13. Immediately after his speech, Greenville Schools Superintendent Susie Riegle and committee member Marlise McCallister will give a presentation about the upcoming school levy.

Senator Cates is Chairman of the Senate Education Committee, representing the 4th District since 2005. Previously he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives, Butler County, from 1999 until 2004. He was a Union Twp. Trustee 1990-1995, and had been on the Middletown City School Board.

Ohio Senate President Bill Harris named Senator Cates to the Senate Education Committee position which will include leading a group to dissect Governor Strickland's education plan and move forward with debate and discussion on the state budget bill.

“Schools” will be the theme of this meeting, which will be held at the Chestnut Village Community Center in the Brethren Home complex. Dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. and reservations for dinner are required; please call Wavelene Denniston at 547-6477 by April 9.

The general public is invited. Those who wish to attend just the program and not the dinner, could come at 7:00 p.m. without prior reservations.

  1. This should be a very informative event. Senator Cates on state education and Ms Riegle and Ms. McCallister on our local levy.

  2. Is Gary Cates running for US House? Why else would he be schmoozing the Republicans so far away from his home in West Chester?

  3. In answer:

I understand that he has several friends in Darke County, and the Education issue is VERY important right now. I assume the previous writer doesn't plan to attend?

  4. In response to the comment directly above. It is politically naive to think he is doing this simply because he "has a friend" in Darke County. Cates is term limited for the senate. Darke County is the furthest point in the Congressional district that contains Cates' home. It seems to me he is trying to make more friends in an area he will need should he decide to run (should Boehner decide to retire).

These comments aren't because the fundraiser is for Republicans. If you see a Democrat giving a talk far afield, I can promise you, they are thinking about running for a bigger seat too.
