Are you ready for some football?

Do you even want football?

A very smart lady suggested that the Darke Journal should start covering sports. So a couple ideas are under consideration for limited coverage of high school football ...

  • A game of the week. The most interesting game each week would be covered, with some photos, video, and stats.
  • An attempt at comprehensive Darke County coverage, which would probably mean nothing in-depth for any single game, but scores and summaries for all the games.
  • No coverage at all.

An additional idea could be a combination of #1 and #2 above if we had some die-hard fans / citizen journalists who would step forward and agree to cover their favorite team (if so, email: darkejournal@gmail.com).

Any feedback?

  1. I think if people post up the scores of the games on here as comments, it would be saaaaaaaweeeet!

  4. It is your site and only you know how much time and effort go into it.
Think about this, High school football, then basketball, also college and pro football followed by the bowl games and pro basketball, well you see ---- it could snowball into a full time job, so I think you should make the choices, and start small then if you can handle it, nibble at the next step.

    Enjoy

  5. Well, it's a local website, so there would probably never be coverage of college/pro. I'm trying to avoid a lot of work by getting some help with some of the county teams.

A new idea might be an "open thread" every Friday night. People can send their comments - or maybe text me with updates.

  6. the open thread idea is likely best. If you try to pick and choose which games to post on, there will inevitably be a school that feels left out some how. Also, you likely don't want to have to cover every single game in the area every week, then set yourself up for doing the same for basketball and the spring sports.

An open thread would make the content user generated, which has its own set of pros and cons.

  7. It would also be easy to have a reliable contact that would be attending their school games and then forwarding the scores to you, that way you would only have to approve the results and move them to the website.

  8. Could you do an open thread like JJ Huddle where people post the scores or even updates as the games are happening? JJ is how I keep up with the scores for my Dad and brothers games (coaches on the other side of the state). You have to weed out the comments sometimes, but for the most part the scores are very accurate. You could just monitor comments like you do now for other stories you cover. Love the idea b/c if you don't catch the Tiger at the right time Friday night...you've missed it all and your Advocate delivery may not come until Saturday afternoon.
