Aerial search near Bear's Mill (marijuana found)

Update: the following press release from the Darke County Sheriff's Office was received today. The press release was accompanied by a note indicating that the discovery of marijuana was in fact related to the aerial search previously discussed on this website on September 8 (story below). Here is the press release:

OVER $300,000 WORTH OF MARIJUANA SEIZED

On Tuesday, September 8th and Wednesday, September 9th, the Darke County Sheriff's Office along with the BCI Marijuana eradication team, and Greenville Police Department performed a joint marijuana eradication in Darke County . During the search several woods and fields were found to have marijuana plants growing in them. A total of approximately 316 marijuana plants, ranging in height of up to 9 feet, were located and removed from the county. The search was deemed very successful and charges will be pending for several subjects for their part in the cultivation of Marijuana. The total street value of the Marijuana removed from Darke County is estimated at over $300,000.00

Here is the story from September 8:

From the chat log ... "The Sheriff's department is currently conducting a very intense aerial search of a property across from Bears Mill ... A helicopter has been flying over this area for the past 15 minutes or so, sometimes VERY low!"

This is all unconfirmed - take it for what it's worth. More details as they develop.

  1. Nothing new...every year near harvest time a task force including a helicopter search for marjiuana crop hidden in fields. They usually find quite a bit and it gets destroyed.

  2. HMMM Thats awful funny, about the same time they have a major criminal bust on Hunter road, for drugs, stolen items and such makes people wonder if the person there didn't give a few tips about where all these plants were???

  3. It doesn't matter if there were any tips or not, this crap has to be gotten off the street, it won't stop it, but somebody lost some money here, too bad.

  4. They should just legalize it, tax it and call it a day. I'm always shocked at the number of people I know who do it. Me NOT being one of them, but people you would never suspect in a million years smoke it...lol. I'm more concerned with the meth labs and hardcore drugs like crack, heroine...those are the ones that need the attention.

  5. I agree with Katrina.Do you no how much money the state and city could make on just the taxes.Your allso right about the other drugs.I think prescription drugs are a lot worse than a little pot.

  6. War on Poverty, War on Terror, War on Drugs. You'd think that after so many years, the parallels would be obvious.

  7. What I want to know is, who funded this operation? I realize that we need to do things to keep drugs off the streets, but at what expense? How can you go from considering closing the jail to save money to hiring a helicopter? It doesn't make sense to me.

  8. They don't hire a helicopter. The helicopter comes from BCI & I (Bureau of Criminal Identification & Investigation).

  9. I believe that the state funds everything but the local law enforcement for every county in the state

  10. For all of you that don't "care" is pot is legal or illegal ever stop and think about what it leads to? Most likely harder drugs, illegal prescription drugs and hard core substances. Don't you find it strange that you can smoke pot, take drugs and if you get stopped for a simple traffic violation they don't drug test you or even ask if you are on drugs???? BUT....don't leave the local pizza joint or resturant and have a glass of wine or a beer with your meal BECAUSE that is ILLEGAL and considered a large fine and some jail time. If the police decide to stop you for a simple traffic violation, you are going to be asked if you were drinking and subject to breath in a machine, why is the person on drugs not?? I wonder why Darke County is ok with drugs and people that provide the drugs or do them. Having small children in a local school district I don't want pot smokers or any other type of drugs next to my children? Do you? If they remove $300,000.00 of pot out of fields, can you imagine what they could have if they would just start busting people!!

  11. So you want urine tested at check points too?

I mean to be fair they do look for the signs of it, pupil dilation, reaction times, etc.. when they stop someone...

To say cannabis will lead to harder drugs is a bit of a slippery slope... I enjoy beer, but I'm not going to go out and buy Absinthe, thats illegal...

  12. If you aint never smoked it I feel you have no right to judge some one who has.How much of that $300,000 would the county government get if it would have been taxed? In stead of destroyed?

  13. The only reason pot is illegal is simply because they haven't determined an effective method of taxation. From another angle,I recall reading, in a very old book, words spoken to one called the Apostle Peter to the effect of "call nothing God has created unclean."

  15. I agree with 8:50 pm it is made by the lord booze is not.Oh yeh he turned water to wine I forgot.

  16. TO 9/17 6:56.... what do you think wine and booze is made from a foreign object???? It all should be illegal, think of all the families that are destroyed by alcohol alone. To 9/16 11:38 I agree!!!!!!!!!!

  17. Apostle Peter to the effect of "call nothing God has created unclean." He was talking about food. Stop taking his words out of context. Maybe you should know something about the bible before you spout off.
