New poll: should marijuana be legalized?

In response to the marijuana eradication story below, there have been a handful of comments and emails from people saying marijuana should be legalized - and taxed. The response was somewhat surprising given the generally conservative nature of Darke County.

And now we'll see how strong that sentiment is. Cast your vote.

  1. I keep getting error message that says I have already voted, but I have not. Trying to vote yes, but no, not stoned.....not touched the stuff in 25 years.

  2. I voted yes. I've only tried it twice in my youth and drugs aren't my thing, but so many people do it and out of all the drugs out there, this one is the lesser of all the evils. Plus, it's used for medical purposes. Why not tax it? It would bring money and jobs. Two things we desperately need right now.

  3. T'would be a far, far, better way to generate more revenue than legalized gambling. The mob's numbers game has far better odds than government-run lotteries.

  4. We already have legalized gambling, it's called the Ohio State Lottery, atleast with gambling, there is less of a chance of somebody getting injured or killed by somebody gambling over somebody that is stoned.

  5. Smokey? Gee thanks for the kind words DJ. Thinking whoever set up the poll to start with might have been smoking one, LOL.

    BTW- Do love this site.

  6. I think its a slippery slope to legalize behavior changing drugs for the sake of revenues. For many marijuana could be the starting point for an addiction.

What other behavior do we wish to make legal - prostitution?

  7. Bunch of pot heads. You say lesser of the evils. I think your talking about other drugs. What do you think most crack head start off with at first. Yeah, your right marijuana. It impairs your judgement like alcohol does. Yeah, thats great lets legalize marijuana. Then when one of your love ones has been killed in a car crash, cause of a stone person, don't complain. Its legal!!!!

  9. Either marijauna should be legalized or alcohol banned!

  10. 6:52, you are correct. I would much rather share the highways with a bunch of potheads than even a few drunks!

  11. Please, if you want to talk about revenue, think of the amount of business the new Taco Bell will do. I believe that they may know something by moving ino a larger building. Justin Case.

  12. Actually I vote, yes, haven't done any for many years but when I did it was supplied by a Doctor, you get a quicker "buzz" than with alcohol.

  13. To 6:52 AM where do you think booze comes from? It can be made with water, sugar, grapes, corn, yeast. Guess who put that here?? Doesn't matter if you are on the highway drinking or smoking a joint, reactions are the same. I vote NO, we already have enough problems without legalizing another mind altering item.

  14. To 2:55 pm poster. Yes, having pot be illegal has solved all of the worlds problems (sarcasm in case any missed it)

Did anyone ever stop to think that if we dedicated the resources we spend fighting the illegal pot to fighting real drugs, we might actually make some head way in this battle.

I have known law enforcement officers, teachers, business owners, lawyers, and even a doctor who has at one point or another smoked pot. And I am not just talking about the wild teenage and college years.

  15. He might have put the stuff here but men figured out how to make it.Or I supose now your going to say that he gave men the knowledge to make it.

  16. I give up smart guy. You asked, Guess who put that here?? You never answered the question. Are you talking about God? What God are you talking about? The Christian god, or the islam, the hindu, the buddist, or the thousand other gods people have in their heads. If your talking about the christian god, then your right he did put it there. I really don't think his intensions were to smoke it. Yes, Jesus drank wine, but the bible also says a drunkard with not go to heaven. Is people so weak minded and emotionally weak they need drugs or alcohol to escape? Really sad to me. Don't go off about me being a religous nut cause i mention Jesus and the bible. I am far from that or even going to church. I just remember from years ago.

  17. It slays me when I read about people posting that we should legalize something to create another habit for people who propose they don't have any money because the obama administration has financially ruined them in his 8 month tenure in the white house. Lets face it, good pot cost good money, so pay your bills first then smoke 'em if you got 'em.

  18. "the obama administration has financially ruined them in his 8 month tenure in the white house." If that is the most intelligent comment or excuse that you can make, after what and who preceded him, your judgement is irrelevant.

  19. To 8:11 am what kind of goverment do you want a dictatorship. All im saying people should have the choice to smoke if they want to.That is what is wrong with this country the power has took away from the people and to much of it has been put in the hands of the politicians. In order to fix the economy it is going to take some drastic changes in the way EVER BODY thinks.

  20. Have those of you apposed to legalization actually tried it. For those of us with ongoing anxiety issues, pain, cancer, MS, it does wonders. Would I rather smoke every evening before bed or take my evening Xanax (which is highly addictive). You do the math. Also, read the history on marijuana and why it was made illegal to begin with. I would rather have legal marijuana (which has some medical purpose) rather than alcohol which is much more dangerous and has no use medically.

  21. September 18, 2009 8:18 PM posting. All your trying to do is justify you being addicted to pot. If you want to be a loser pot head, then be one. Don't try to give us your line of sh@@! Marijuana would be legal for medical purposes if it really had any medical benefits.

Now there is the opinion of a real "tool."

  23. September 19, 2009 11:22 AM. You must be a welfare pot head loser. Do you have a job? Or does all of us who work pay for your life?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Sure I have a job, two to be exact. And I pay my share of taxes to help fund welfare for both rich and poor. I even know correct grammar usage.

  25. Stop smoking pot and maybe you could have one good job.

  26. Have any of you ever been sick and needed it for medical reasons? I have and it does work. As far as making it legal for everyone... that is crazy! Unfortunately doctors would prescribe it to anyone who would pay them enough (or at least some doctors).

  27. I am currently taking an unreal amount of pain killers and muscle relaxers (oxycontin and vicodin) everyday which clearly costs a larger and larger amounts of money. I would welcome being able to legally have pot to relief this pain. However, the legal drugs I take aren't working well either, so pot can't hurt either. So yes making it legal would help those of use who could use the relief. Not that we'll see it anytime soon, because to much money could be made by regular people.

  28. Learn to live with the pain, I have for 10 years. My back is so screwed up, it takes me 5 minutes to get out of bed and moving. I still go to work everyday. I don't need drugs to keep me gonig.

  29. One of the problems inhibiting legalization is that people who smoke a glass pipe are not considered serious or mature. It is this stigma that scares many people who use pot to keep it a secret. It is up to us to be public about our choices and to make sure our voices are heard by the ones that ultimately decide what the rules are. Every letter you send to a representative is considered the voice of a thousand constituents that did not take the time to write.
