So what do you think about this?

  1. Shades of Hilter "Youth" and Mao's "great leader"! Get 'em young and impressionable. Let's see, would these kids be old enough to vote for him in 2016 ? Maybe elect him "President for life"?

  2. Really? Because the president is speaking to america's youth he is indoctrinating them with with evil?

Seriously, some times the most conservatives of us need to get over themselves. No one thought twice when every other president came and spoke to school children.

It's time we get past this painting broad strokes with words like "socialism" and "the annointed one" and discuss the real issues. I'm don't like the way the healthcare reform sounds at this point, but i think it is a little unfair/ignorant to get insanely up and arms and down right idiotic about it.

  3. I'm pretty sure it was announced that the goal of the address the kids was the encourage them working hard for their education, to try to hammer home their importance in the future of america.

I keep hearing some commentators joke about him using it as an opty to "mindwash" or whatever, but that's just it, it's a joke. However, there seem to be a lot of conservatives who take these jokes as serious business and run with it.

"Oh no! the sitting president is address the children of the united states!"

this isn't a time for "mama bears" and such to come out and protect their young. Give me a break. If it was W, I'm sure those same people would applaud it.

the atmosphere of fear and paranoia from the right is staggering sometimes.

  4. No - I don't think my kids will get brainwashed from one hour of listening to Obama. But I do not approve of an hour of instruction on "how to help your president," when I don't like a lot of the things he's doing.

The administration itself has signalled that it went too far with its original agenda, given that they've scrubbed the government website of some of the initial lessons ... http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2009/09/obamas-back-to-school-message----scribbled-with-some-controversy.html.

And just for perspective, how would a June 2008 address from G.W. Bush on "helping your president" have been received?

To the last commenter ... there's no fear or paranoia here. But I will talk to my children about this beforehand.

  5. Scoff if you like. German parents chuckled until their little "brown shirt" children turned them in to the National Socialist Party. Total government control of our country? Start with 5 to 10 year olds.

  6. darke journal is not what was meant by the fear and paranoia folks, the comment directly below it was.

You've got to be incredibly cynical to compare the presidency to nazi germany. No matter his methods, Hitler wanted war, he wanted power, and he wanted territory. Our current administration is not showing those signs of aggression.

It's easy to draw imaginary parallels to the greatest historical evil. What's more difficult is to have an honest conversation.

I'm not an incredibly strong liberal, I have an independent viewpoint on things. Many things i lean conservative on, some liberal... I just shake my head in disappointment every time i read something like the 10:10 am comment at how ignorant some members of the population are.

  7. @ DarkeJournal

In the link you provided, it clarifies that the intent was "how to help the president reduce the dropout rate."

Why can that not be taken at face value? Why are the hard right conservatives so quick to see this as some attempt to turn everyone into communist fascists (yes, I'm aware of the juxtaposition, many are not).

If GW had addressed the children in June of 08 on how to help reduce the dropout rate, then that would be great. It would have been met with late night jokes about GW's own intelligence level.

I would think that a presidential address to the youth of the nation would been seen as an overwhelming positive attempt to include, educate and encourage children to take importance in their country and the world outside of their own. Does anyone honestly believe that Obama or anyone would have the balls to address anyone, let alone children in the manner in which it is being portrayed by some?

  8. In January, President Chávez declared education one of the five "motors" driving his socialist revolution and named his older brother education minister.

Under Hugo Chávez, annual per capita spending on education has nearly doubled. The government has reduced illiteracy and set up free schools so adults can earn high school diplomas and university degrees.

Last week, Adan Chávez sent hundreds of red-shirted "brigade" members to different parts of Venezuela to hold workshops outlining the government's plans for education. He told Venezuelans to remain calm about the pending changes, which he said are designed to promote unity.

"We are not going to inject communism into children from the day they are born," Adan Chávez told the state-run VTV television. "We simply plan to include in the curriculum ... the authentic values of society — which means socialism."

    ReplyDelete
  9. "Why can that not be taken at face value?" ... Let's see.

Obama said no lobbyist would ever work in his
White House. He has several of them.

Obama said that all legislation would be posted on the internet for the public for 5 days before any vote. He broke that promise with the stimulus bill.

The signing of the stimulus also broke his promise to end the practice of earmarks.

Obama said executive Bush-era "signing statements" were unconstitutional. Obama did his first signing statement on March 11.

Obama promised to have the most transparent presidency in the history of the country. There are too many contradictions to list here ... but one is the refusal to release various lists of White House visitors.

I could go on and on. Go to google and type in "obama broken campaign promises" and you'll have hundreds of articles to choose from, even a few from salon.com and msnbc, if that's what you like.

Take him at face value? No way.

  10. What ever happen to looking under the covers and not taking everthing at face value.Hitler used smoke and mirrors (and I'm not saying Obama is Hitler)until he got who he wanted and what he wanted from others. You lay out a plan and in that plan you have seedlings (children)and when those children grow up thinking the way you wanted them to think then you reap what you sow.But both parties do this

  11. MADISON - U.S. Rep. Paul Broun is again raising the specter of Democrats turning the United States into a totalitarian state.

Broun, R-Athens, apparently has not changed his belief that President Obama may be a fascist since he made similar remarks in Augusta in November and then in an Associated Press interview.

He told a meeting of the Morgan County Republicans on Wednesday night that Obama already has or will have the three things he needs to make himself a dictator: a national police force, gun control and control over the press.

"He has the three things that are necessary to establish an authoritarian government," Broun said. "And so we need to be ever-vigilant, because freedom is precious."

    ReplyDelete
  12. so he broke campaing promises and ended up performing the job as his predecessors? I understand broken campaing promises making someone leary of intentions, but to make the leap in logic from someone not meeting campaign promises for transparency to the fear that he will use an address on education to our youths as a way of spreading a socialist agenda is a bit much.

@11:50 - So since Chavez placed an importance on education, we can't now? Is education for commies? Can our President not address our youths? He is supposedly the most powerful man on the planet. If he can use that leverage to maybe grab the ear of a few kids to work harder and devote more effort to their education, is that a bad thing?

Lets face it, in a broad scope of things, americans are entering a new world with new rules and a new economy. If our children are not held to task in getting the best possible education, we will never be able to compete in the global markets. The importance of education is not a policital issue, but Obama's attempt at addressing it has been made into one.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'm hoping 12:22 is posting that as a joke.

Is he a commie or a fascist? Can he be both?

    ReplyDelete
  14. I am not old enough to remember Hitler but my grandparents are. They remember Hitler doing the type of things GW did, not what Obama is doing. So I guess anybody, any side, any party, can see evil in any leader if they choose to look for it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I agree with the above poster. If you roll things around long enough, you could find fault with anyone or anything. The bible in one hand is a guide for living and responding out of love, in the hand of another we are all hell bound into damnation. I don't agree with all the things the president has done, but I think the standing of the U.S.., concerning foreign policy, improved when he was elected.

    ReplyDelete
  16. We let G.W. brainwash all of us into W.O.M.D. for justification of a war that still makes absolutely no sense to me. So I guess that makes Obama evil for talking to kids about staying in school? As far as campaign promises being broken, sure he did break some of those, but I guess conservatives are above taking part in something as evil as this as well.

    ReplyDelete
  17. If Darke Journal wants to throw Obama under the bus for "broken campaign promises" then look out, because there are plenty of democrats AND republicans already under there! Politicians make promises to get elected; once elected, they follow their own agenda. Its our job as voters to keep them honest and not re-elect them.

    ReplyDelete
  18. You anonymous commenters are pretty shifty! All I said was that I wasn't going to accept any claims of Obama at face value. I wasn't willing to do that even before the election. But I'm especially not going to do it now, given a slew of broken promises on many of the key issues that got him elected. Nobody's under the bus. I'm just not going to automatically accept everything Obama says as true. It would be foolish to do so at this point.

  19. Raise your kids right and they will know better than to believe this bull. I am fearful of the day I get the call from the school that either my 9 year old daughter or 12 year old son got in trouble for trying to dispute the liberal teachers they each have, as they were preaching Obamas gospel to them.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I didn't vote for obama, and I'm glad. I don't believe that he is comparable to Hitler, but I do believe that he wants socialism - which is an awful thing for this great country. It's starts by "talking" to our youth. I hope that my kids don't have to listen to him on Tuesday at school.

    ReplyDelete
  21. To Commenters of Sep. 3, 12:54 and 2:35 PM; Your's are by far the most insightful comments. I can't recall the last time any President spoke exclusively to the youth, or if it has ever happened. The youth are our future? Then what good reason is there to hate the upcoming address; especially when it can be heard by all who listen?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Some of these comments have been Republic or Democratic based, and not just Obama. But, as DarkeJournal pointed out, "automatically accept everything Obama says as true. It would be foolish to do so at this point" ... Accepting what any politician says, democrat or republic, male or female, white, black or purple, national to the city level ... is pretty foolish,

    ReplyDelete
  23. I agree, letting any President talk to a bunch of school children should be looked at as "Brainwashing", oops it seems to me that is what 'W' was doing on Sept 11, 2001 when he was notified that planes had just hit the Trade Centers, I remember the astonished look on his face, DUH!!! Of course he would have had a terrible time brainwashing anyone, the first requirement is to have an IQ greater than the subject you are trying to brainwash!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Liberal teachers? In Darke County? I know of three. Are you people serious?

The communities in this county are so overwhelmingly conservative that I for one would welcome a few teachers with a different perspective on the world for my children. If you teach people to think for themselves, then when they hear perspectives different than their own, they can weigh them and think about them in light of their own experiences.

God forbid we hear ideas that are not already aligned with our own. I think we have some fascists right here on this comment board.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Just to make sure I have the Republican position straight:

For eight years, anyone who criticized Bush was branded as an unpatriotic, unAmerican heathen. Now, anyone who criticizes Obama is just doing his civic duty to stop the insidious spread of socialism.

So, by extension, the Republican philosophy now goes something like this: lying in order to go to war, condoning torture, and eavesdropping on U.S. citizens = good; encouraging kids to work hard in school = bad.

    Makes perfect sense.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well, it could be worse. It could be Bill Clinton talking to an all-female school with no adult supervision.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think there are biggers issues with who is educating our youth today than listing to Obama blabber for an hour. College professors are preaching liberal garbage at alarming rates and then TESTING on that! How is a student supposed to think for themself when their professor will fail them for having opposing ideas? It is pathetic. No wonder so many college students vote Democrat, followed by a shift towards conservatism after school. They get out of school and realize "Damn, Democrats are idiots!"

    ReplyDelete
  28. Bingo, 11:03 PM!!! You figured it out. Thank goodness that you escaped the dogma of the liberal professors so you could post wonderful treats like this.

Keep them coming. I'm making popcorn.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Nice anecdote, 11:03. I don't suppose you actually have any, you know, proof or evidence of any of this? Because I can really imagine all those English and science and communications and engineering and business professors testing students on contemporary politics. Don't try to preach about the evils of the university if you've never actually been there yourself.

I realize that Darke Journal is also a platform for right-wing politics (a sampling of the news stories on the sidebar bears this out), but could we at least try to touch down in reality every now and then?

    ReplyDelete
  30. You are allowed to drag your children to church every sunday, have them baptized by the time they are five, and convince them that the religion you choose for them is righteous and without fault, yet letting them listen for one day, for one hour to the leader of their nation talk about the importance of them being at school is wrong?!?!

Education is the most important thing. It goes hand in hand with economic recovery. In case you haven't noticed there are fewer and fewer jobs for the unskilled, uneducated, if we do not work to keep kids in school and give them the best education possible, then things will only get worse.

To the poster at 11:03 - Maybe your kids should have chosen their college better. There are plenty of schools such as BYU that are very conservative. Most college aged voters do not have anything riding on the outcome of the vote, thus they usually vote with what they think is best, not what is best for them...

I think this whole thing boils down to the fear that your kids might come home and have ideas that are not your own, they might have questions about the things you say, or they will come to realize that both parties are full of idiots and think of a better way of doing things... God forbid they be able to see both sides of and issue be allowed to truly think for themselves... Nothing is left or right, its all shades of grey...

  31. In response to Marty September 3, 2009 7:52 PM posting. All of you that dog George Bush, That make fun of him for being stupid. Have you ever been the president of the greatest country in the world? Are you a successful business man or woman? He has done a lot in life for being a dummy, so much more than you. That must make you very stupid. Get over bashing George!!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think this boils down to uncertainy over just who we've elected to lead this nation. Makes people suspicious of ANY government effort. The speech was not the issue, it was the workbook that accompanied it--- too liberal and too fawning over Obama. Parents have an absolute right to monitor what their children are taught.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Considering the man hasn't even been in office a year, I don't know how anyone can honestly judge him one way or the other yet. Nothing in politics happens overnight. Heck, it took GWB eight long years to bend us over. NOBODY is going to be able to fix that in under a year.

As for Obama addressing our children with the intent to promote graduating....I can't find fault with that. If it encourages even ONE probable future dropout to stick it out and finish it, then it's a good thing. Would you feel the same way if McCain/Palin were in office and making the same speech? Probably not. I'm an Obama supporter and if it were M/P talking to my kids about the importance of an education, I wouldn't bat an eye.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The reason college grads favor voting democrat is they have been taught to think objectively and rationally. Knowledge sets you free from making some of the uneducated comments on here.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 8:33 ... ahh, I see. Republicans are all stupid, uneducated, and unenlightened. And these college students - all those brilliant 18 to 21 year olds - are the only ones seeing the world correctly. Thanks for helping us out with that one. Unfortunately, Obama just has a historic drop in his favorability rating among 18-29 year olds ... so apparently those college professors need to pick up their game a little bit.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I finsihed my BA 2 years ago, in an English program. There are a lot of liberal teachers, but you'd be shocked, SHOCKED I SAY, at how many conservatives there are as well. I minored in business and rarely if ever ran into a prof that was obviosuly liberal.

Although many I could infer their leanings, most left their beliefs out of it.

There, my anecdote counters yours. what do we do with this stale mate?

Also, the originaly issue wasn't that the workbooks were fawning over obama. The workbooks that are still in plan were the originals. It was all about certain right wingers moaning about the verbage of "What does the president want you to do?" and extrapolating that into "OMG, Obama's going to tell my kids to be commies."

I understand general concern for trustworthiness of politicians, but really, it's getting tiring to see such little things exploded into matters for the uneducated, gullible masses to freak the hell out over.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Now that they are talking about changing the workbook things look a little better, but why not have Obama put this same talk on the TV at a time when parents can sit down with their children and listen - and then the "after talk" would have some meaning to both children and their parents. Cookie

    ReplyDelete
  38. Here is the way I see it… I have no problem with the President of the United States speaking to our children “if” his goal is to help reduce the dropout rate. I do have a problem if his goal is to sell his belief… that is for the parents of a child. I don’t have a problem of a teacher, educating our children; however I do have a problem if they try to impose their belief… that is up to the parents. Yes there are some parents who do not fulfill their role as a parent well, and maybe we as a nation suffer for that reason, but it is certainly not the Governments role to try to act as parents.

Those who keep bringing up President Bush in order to justify President Obama… must not really trust in President Obama. Right, wrong or indifferent We American’s were kept Safe from terrorism in our Great Country after 9/11/01, however that is all in our past. Now we have to look at our future, which is the only thing we can influence. We can look at mistakes of the past, to make sure we don’t make them again in the future, but to continually try to relive the past is plain worthless.

Today’s issues of a Government ran Health Care, Cap and Trade, and continued Bail outs of banks and the auto industry are important issues which will greatly effect of future. These are the issues on our table now, nationally. Likewise Building court buildings, schools are more local issues we need to deal with. We need JOBS, both locally and nationally. Let’s quit bickering over the past, and attempt to steer our future in the right direction.

    A Proud American

  39. To the poster at 8:49...

If you really feel that way then I would think you would be all for the president convincing kids to stay in school as they will go to college hear the liberal arguments, and then vote republican...I'm confused at your logic at how this is a bad thing?

The argument was made further up and I think it needs to be echoed that college students usually vote for what is best in general not best for themselves at the moment, as they have their whole lives ahead of them and care about all the issues...

  40. Sarcasm, and name calling will get us no where, educated or not. Thank goodness we are in this great nation to have our own opinions and speak out. My parents raised me to respect the President. No matter if they voted for that person or not, they are the President. I remember having to sit quietly during every presidential address as a child, didnt understand it and bored to tears. But, I am glad my parents had me do this. They also made a huge deal out of voting each and every election, no matter what. We see differently now, on our political views, but my parents and myself give respect to our President. And, that doesnt mean we have to agree with him, just respect him.

He kept us from another 9-11 attack, he never tried to turn us into a socialist country, he tried to turn Iraq into a democracy (which could have helped all relationships in the Mid-east---maybe leading to other democracies.... I admit that's a lost cause.) He let the spending get away from him---but remember, he was dealing with a liberal House from 2006 on. I for one would give anything to have him back!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Another transplanted Darke countian says, at least hear him out before you you start saying it is a ploy to indoctrinate the children...

Yes parents need to get involved in education, but in the right ways, telling schools they aren't allowed to show opposing view points is just ridiculous... Trying to keep students from hearing what the leader of their nation, who was elected by the people, has to say is just un-american...

I really have to think it is quite sad if you are honestly afraid your children are going to be taken in to some sort of Obama-nation of a group (yes pun intended). If history has shown us anything, it is the under-educated and the poor who are taken by radical movements, the working class if you will. You might recall the "Workers being the force behind the success of the glorious Soviet empire."

Generally it is the marginalized who are organized against the more powerful, whether that be the scientists in the case of the catholic church, the aristocracy in the case of the Bolsheviks, the wealthy Jews in the case of the Nazis, or the elite of society in the many revolutions that have occurred around the world.

If your children are free thinkers, taught the importance of their education, which I think is the point of the President's speech, then there is no need for panic, they will not fall victim to organization of the marginalized...

If anything it seems to be the right who is working to insight the masses by pandering to fears of revolution and a changing way of life. Life is going to change, your life today is not the same as the one your parents lived in the 1960's nor the one your grandparents lived in the 1930's if you can't deal with that then I suggest joining up with the Amish, they try to keep things as if they were 1699 if I remember the Weird Al song correctly...

  52. I have once been tested to possess an IQ of 210. I went to college where liberal professors were as prevalent as was oxygen to inhale. When questioning a liberal professor on why he was teaching that the liberal agenda is "right" in class, the resulting banter left him speechless and he called the class "complete" with twenty minutes remaining. Class was cancelled the next day. The following week, the professor began an abrupt sabbatical from teaching, resulting in the department head finishing our "instruction" (I use that term quite loosely) for the course. The professor did not return from sabbatical during the remainder of my education at that institution. From my understanding, he never did return and left teaching.

The moral of the story: this is a comment board. Don't wet your pants over someone using the name "Paul Bunyan" or claiming that liberalism possesses any semblance of intellect. We know both to be part of tall tales.

  54. I'm in college now and finding a conservative professor is hard. Arguing against what Obama or Democrats are doing in class has had me labeled a racist numerous times. Democrats just pull the "you're racist" act when they have no argument. Unfortunately, that seems to be how it works all too often. Even better is when I complained about a professor calling me a racist and the circumstances surrounding it I was told that the professor can teach what he wants and he's in charge of the class, so I need to not disrupt class by disagreeing with him. UNREAL!

  55. I tried to polite by posting the IQ statistics but the farce continues. An IQ score of 135 is the 99% percentile...add 51 points and along with that go a decimal point a lot more 9s.

I know enough of Mensa to know that it's not an acronym and therefore is not typed in all caps. I also know that those gifted enough for membership (98% percentile and above) do not traditionally live in rural communities or sully themselves by engaging in debate with those of inferior intellect. I mean no disrespect to the visitors as I'm including myself in the group.

If your IQ score was 186 you wouldn't be here for mental exercise, you would be trying to solve Goldbach's conjecture and win the Abel Prize (you may have to look that one up).

I respect everyone's right to lively debate and appreciate that the internet presents a lot of room for anonymity. However one cannot expect to make grossly ludicrous claims about their background and not be called out on it.

  56. I'm hungover from too much partying last night before OSU starts their season today and even I know that college professors push their liberal agenda on students.

    It is sick.
    Thankfully, I am not.

The conservative professors I've had let people decide for themselves and aren't pushing anything. They actually EDUCATE on the issues. Liberal professors just rant about issues and why conservatives should believe what they are saying and don't give the other side's arguments.

And as above, question a liberal professor and they get upset that ANYONE could actually hold an opinion that isn't liberal.

    ReplyDelete
  57. "Liberal professors were as prevalent as was he oxygen to inhale."

So the school was made up of 21% liberal professors? That sounds about right...

I think a lot of people need to realize that a "Darke County liberal" is what the rest of the world calls a moderate... Just like the college student above, I think the reason your having a problem finding a "conservative" is that you looking for someone on the FAR right, when I am sure there are plenty of moderate rights if you look for them...

As far as all this about IQ's... It really doesn't matter how high it is, that doesn't mean you actually posses any knowledge, it just means you can have the ability to understand complex ideas more easily than others...

For instance to the pilot... I would fly with you any day, I'm sure you know your aircraft inside and out, understand the avionics and aerodynamics, but I wouldn't ask you to be my lawyer, you do not have that specific knowledge, not that you couldn't but you don't...

  58. So what about the 1988 speech given by the great conservative Ronald Reagan? This speech was given to jr. high students and was very politicaly charged. Would all modern day conservatives allow this?

  59. I see I have , at least "stirred the pot" as it were, I don't normally open conversations on blogs but this one needed more action, you did a great job, Anonymous, I see you also have an unlisted phone, I could have "stirred" more since the biggest things that agitate people are politics and religion. Be that as it may I will stop "Blogging" here and leave you to your own devices.
I will leave you with a quote, -- actually I will give you the Author and you can look up the quote, author is John Guerrero, it should be rather easy as the "
Net" has more on it than it did many years ago.

    adieu

People with high I.Q.s don't advertise the fact. Mensa is a ego-boosting outfit that makes a nice profit.

But, this is off subject. Any parent knows how suseptible little children are to strange ideas. Obama and his tribe know that, too. Sorry, I don't trust any of them.

  61. It looks as if we need a federal law that would prohibit any sitting President from addressing the youth of this nation. Anything less would not be responsive to many we have heard here, along with being fair and equal.

  62. I think its really sad you don't even want to hear what he has to say first... No predispositions here...

He can talk all he wants, I wouldn't be worried until your kids come home with something like this... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socks_the_cat_rocks_the_hill

  63. This is some of the most entertaining reading I've had in a LONG time! I've always said Obama's election will do more to divide the country than to bring it together (among other things). Clearly I can take satisfaction in being right.

  64. "Stay in school," "Work hard," are truly subversive, liberal (Nazi) subliminal buzz words. The broad reaction to Obama's upcoming student address by the right-wing fringe (which is simply their reaction to fanning by lunatic right-wing media) should be an ominous warning to the effectiveness of our Constitution, and the continued existence of this nation.
