Beware of internet trolls

A commenter suggested a friendly warning about internet trolls, which are: "[people who post] controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion" (according to the infallible source wikpedia wikipedia).

We do have a few trolls on this website, notably some people who chimed in against Issue 2 - but others as well. Don't get sucked into their game!

  1. So if someone disagrees with an issue you support, you are now labeling that person a troll and he or she becomes someone to beware of?
BTW,you might want to check your spelling of Wikipedia.

  2. ha.

Disagreeing is not trolling, comments like "everything that is wrong with the economy is george bush's fault."

    or

"if you disagree with obama you are racist"

or generally anything said without merit just to illicit a reaction.... sort of like what you did just there, maybe?

  3. I believe DJ is referring to the posts made by people using the names Ann Coulter and Levi Johnston. A better fix would be to not accept those responses instead of allowing the trolls to post. ;)

  4. I think there are different perceptions of what a troll is. Coulter and Jonston are just goofballs having fun.

When I posted the article supporting Issue 2, there were suddenly a bunch of comments backing hsus, which doesn't seem representative of Darke County readers. Can't prove it, but I'd suspect there are folks out there googling "Issue 2 Ohio" and dumping comments where they can. Those people would be trolls, but their comments were allowed anyway.

  5. I am beginning to wonder if this site and our ability to post comments won't somehow evolve into "BY INVITATION ONLY".

As far as "trollers", it takes one to know one.

  6. Trolls are liberals spewing their facist agendas. Palin in 2012!

  7. Man please,palin in 2012?Are you seriuos?

  8. Palin is our only answer to stop the communist liberal agenda.

  9. Saying that people are googling issue 2 is ridiculous. There are people in Darke County that are not robots and have their own opinion. Maybe the troll is the site manager. Why don't you tell us what we should think then maybe our comments will be welcomed.

  10. I already posted an article saying this website supports Issue 2. So you know what I think.

I have heard no Darke Countians speak out publicly against Issue 2. Yet, when I write an article, suddently a bunch of anti-Issue-2 coments pop up.

So it's either one of two things: 1) there are people in Darke County who are against Issue 2 but afraid to say it publicly, or 2) maybe there are some hsus trolls out there. It could be either one, or both!

  11. As someone who commented speaking out against Issue 2, let me assure you that it wasn't to provoke anyone. I am lifetime resident of Darke County and a registered Republican. But I do have my own opinions and take a more centered approach on issues of animal welfare and the environment.

Your answer is #1. Speaking out publicly against Issue 2 could prove dangerous in this county. Vandalism, threats, or worse.

  12. I agree with 11:13 AM - from start to finish. And, enlighten me - what is hsus?

  13. HSUS = Humane Society of the United States, a far left-wing group which advocates crazy stuff like chickens need room to roam, cows should not be in pens, etc. HSUS has nothing to do with the local humane societies who take care of puppies and kittens. They highjacked the good name of the humane society.

HSUS has pushed through constitutional amendments in other states already (such as CA) which have devastated the agriculture business. HSUS has said they are coming to Ohio next.

I agree with the people who say an animal rights board is not an appropriate issue for a constitutional amendment. The problem is that if we don't pass Issue 2 this year, then HSUS will come to Ohio next year and pass its own ag-killing amendment, which would be especially devastating to our community.

  14. "...a far left-wing group which advocates crazy stuff like chickens need room to roam, cows should not be in pens, etc."

Why is that crazy? Some say free range meat is the best you will ever eat. And why do we need to advocate tight, possibly cruel, pens for animals just because we are going to eat them? I agree that the HSUS is far left and radical, but I also agree that keeping animals pened up so that they cannot even turn around is just as radical if not more so.

  15. I am a Darke County resident and a registered Republican who does not support Issue 2 for the simple reason that we should not be amending our Constitution for this. I am for less government rather than more government and this issue will create more government. I am also against attempts to scare people by making statements such as, "The problem is that if we don't pass Issue 2 this year, then HSUS will come to Ohio next year and pass its own ag-killing amendment...". That is clearly an opinion rather than a fact.

  16. Wow - I'm glad to see this website has evolved to the point that people are willing to take shots at me ... :)

To 3:10pm ... my statement is a hypothetical that will hopefully never come to pass. But if Issue 2 fails, we'll find out whether my statement is true or not.

  17. DJ--Re your 4:34 post, I am pleased that you realize this is all just honest differences of opinions and not personal. As for your hypothetical statement, I too hope that it will never come to pass since you are stating that HSUS WILL (not may)come to Ohio next year and WILL (not may) pass its own amendment to our Constitution that WILL (again not may) kill agriculture.

  18. 6:27 ... I was only repeating what I've heard many times from people who would know. And that is that we are targeted in 2010 by HSUS for the same type of amendment they've gotten passed in other states. I wasn't trying to oversell anything ... just repeating what I've heard.

Coincidentally, HSUS has passed these amendments by running ads of emaciated and abused animals - and consequently winning over huge blocks of metropolitan voters who know nothing about agriculture. Very dirty, imho.

  19. "Just repeating what I've heard" should NOT carry a lot of weight.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I agree. But I said "repeating what I've heard many times from people who would know," which in this case happens to be Greenville's state rep and senator, who not only have researched the issue at length, but also helped to get Issue 2 on the ballot. And I know them to be honest people. So jeez - quit giving me the Limbaugh treatment and quoting half of my sentence out of context ... :)

  21. I would like to hear Greenville's State Senator (a right-wing, government-can do-nothing-right tool of the insurance companies) explain why that now, more government in the form of Issue 2 is the proper solution.

    ReplyDelete
  22. And if Issue 2 does pass, it isn't going to necessarily stop the HSUS. They may come in a year from now with their pictures of dead and decaying hens laying at the bottom of battery cages with live hens. They will proclaim, "See, this board is not working! Treatment did not improve, just like we told you it wouldn't! We need to pass Issue #x to eliminate this board and put in place new standards."

Just as Issue 2 will allow amending of the state constitution another issue could revoke the amendment. Do people really think having this board will get the HSUS to say, "oh, you've got it under control, we'll move on." Yeah right!

  23. Becoming More Conservative EverydayOctober 19, 2009 at 3:21 PM

Darke Journal Oct 14 6:43PM and 10:09PM..... "from people who would know". First, there is no possible way that anyone can for say for fact what the future holds. They may offer an educated guess or just a guess. I would like to believe that the voters of Darke County, as well as most of the State of Ohio are educated enough to know that they don't have to cut off their arm, to spite their hand. Meaning we don"t have to pass one BAD idea to keep another BAD idea from happening.

  24. I don't know, DJ, some of these folks are making me wonder about a constitutional amendment to do this, maybe it is too extreme?
