For discussion: government-run healthcare

If the current House Bill is so great then: (1) why is it not scheduled to take effect until after the 2012 election? ... and (2) why aren't members of Congress required to be part of the plan?

Are these admissions that the bill is a disaster?

UPDATE: poll out today confirms majority against PelosiCare bill.

  1. If you recall, the Democrats decided that the world is truly going to end in 2012. Thus, they need to go out with a bang by screwing everyone over until then and by ending history as in charge of the U.S. If the world continues on, they really haven't any idea what to do with the mess and massive debt they've created.

  2. It's almost comical to me. Every poll now shows a strong majority of Americans are opposed to government-run healthcare.

Apparently, their idea is to "defer" the plan until after Obama's re-election campaign.

But if they do that, then Republicans can say, "hey, you need to hurry up and elect us - and we'll repeal this disaster before it ever takes effect." That would seem to be a winning argument (at least on today's playing field).

  3. As trite as it sounds, "What part of NO don't they CHOOSE to understand?"

  4. Our healthcare system is broken. It is only going to get worse. We don't have good coverage and it is going to cost more in the future.
To do nothing is the biggest mistake we could make. It is time for congress earn their pay. They are the only ones that can straighten this mess out.

  5. First: Please notice that the stimulus money won't kick in until summer 2010---wait! Isn't that just before the House elections? Hmmm.....

Yes the health care situation need to be fixed, but NOT by making it an arm of the government. Mr. Boehner had some solid ideas for helping, but the liberals (I refuse to call them "progressives") want a socialistic America--this is on their agenda for us.

Everyone should be opposed to government run healthcare....I use the word "care" reluctantly. Can anyone name one program run by the government that has been a success?

  7. Just a short list of government failures: Social "security", Medicare, Medicaid,Katrina and most recently Cash for clunkers. These are what come to mind as I write this. Social "Security" has failed inpart due to allowing people who have not paid into it to draw from it. We are all just a "Quack" away from being diagnosed with a debilitating illness and collecting from some government fund!!! Hold your hand out and it will get filled.....SAD, very SAD

  8. I think we should do away with all govt. subsidies. Medicare, medicaid, social security, farm subsidy payments, school lunches, city tax abatement, the list can go on and on forever. I agree that govt. has its flaws, but more than just the DJ readers rely on them. It always is astonishing that many are quick to judge the abuse of the tax dollar, and look around and find out they have also reaped the benefit at anothers(tax payers) expense.

  9. To 2:13, some people may have been in a situation where they have needed help. But, make no mistake; there IS a difference in using help and becoming a PERMENT leech, always taxing the system. These are the kind of people that don’t appreciate the help……but come to EXPECT it. Continue raising the taxes on the wealthy and this will be a country of POOR PEOPLE! The wealthy will find a country that allows them to keep more “their hard earned money” instead of handing over to lazy leeches that offer NOTHING to society. WAKE UP AMERICA!!!

  10. DJ, you say that "every poll shows a strong majority...." My little googling showed something different. Can you give some examples? Show me the polls, or at least links where I can find them. I think one thing about polls is the results vary from poll to poll, depending on how the poll questions are worded. For example, a "Government Takeover" sounds much different from a "Medicare-type plan for all ages."

  14. OK, DJ, the polls are not as decisive as you seem to indicate. The answer to What does the public think?" is "It depends on who does the polling."

Here are a couple of quotes from the Rasmussin article on health care:

"Polling on the health care topic by many firms has created some confusion. In particular, polls on the public option show a wide variety of results...."

"While voters are skeptical of the plan working its way through Congress, 54% say major changes are needed in the health care system. 61% say it's important for Congress to pass some reform."

A Gallup article I just read shows the public trusting Obama over the Republicans by a wide margin.

For some reason I am unable to paste directly into the comment box, which makes it time consuming and difficult to get direct links in here. I'll list links when I'm able to copy and paste.

Also, you must admit Rasmussen's more conservative leanings, and his polling results are almost always more conservative. I don't trust his polling by itself, unless measured against other polls.

  15. Before you can "fix" health care you have to know what's broken.
I have not heard one Democrat address needed tort reform, I know a lot of docs and all practice "defensive medicine", they have no choice if they want to keep from getting sued all the time.
Unless the Dems address that then no bill should be passed in any form.
But since the trial lawyers own the dems it will not be addressed, mark my word.

  16. Just as the insurance companies own the Republicans!

  17. And the insurance companies also run healthcare, not the medical people.

  18. Get Real people! If their is a government health option for an employer to get for employees....they will. That will drive private run health insurance OUT OF BUSINESS. When that happens everyone EXCEPT our ELECTED OFFICIALS will the worst health care imaginable!!!
