It has everything to do with blood sucking politicians in Greenville who have nothing better to do with their time other than be asses and f**k this city even more than it is now.
OK- I am not sure what the lease of a business through a private owner has anything to do with local politicians. Don't get me wrong- I am a Broadway Joe's regular.
That is sad we dont need to lose another store uptown. there are lots of empty stores uptown if it not the money. they raised the rent or having someone else moving in. a furniture store is empty uptown it is not on broadway they could change the name to almost on broadway
I hope they re-open in another location, as much as I like the atmosphere at Joe's it's the people and the great product that keep me coming back! I wish Jim/Trish and the rest of the employees the best of luck :)
Who in the world orchestrates bad decisions like this one? With what other kind of business could the people of Greenville be better served at that particular location? Here's hoping that Joe's staff can quickly find a new location! I see our beautiful and eclectic downtown dying bit by bit...very discouraging.
I am starting to see a pattern here. Italian Cafe leaves and now Broadway Joes. I think whoever ownes this property is asking way to much for the lease. I'll miss the cafe mocha!! Hope to see them somewhere else in this town.
Anonymous on January 20, 2010, at 9:06 a.m. is correct. Paramount Properties has worked with a lot of business owners to keep downtown properties filled as long as possible...
Wow such sad news… such a Quaint Business downtown Greenville. I think everyone working or shopping downtown enjoyed this coffee shop. Hopefully they can come up with another location or better yet, work with the building owner and stay where they are.
As a rule, I think "Anonymous" should be followed up by "Coward" in comment sections like these… Step up, be a man and let people know who you are when you post idiotic speculation. I hate it when people hide behind the internet!
I WONDER IF CBS HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THIS... THEY ARE KNOWN FOR DOING THINGS WRONG....LETS LEARN FROM OTHERS MISTAKES...LEAVE BROADWAY JOE'S HERE...COME ON PEOPLE...GET YOURS HEADS ON STRAIGHT...
I find it hard to believe Joe's didn't pay. And the Italian Cafe didn't pay too? Also, Jim has said it wasn't due to payment. Paramount Properties has worked with them, and has probably worked another deal to put something else in there. It's my understanding Joe's was on a month to month agreement, PP may have hiked the rate to clear the building for the new coffee shop...
Sorry Anonymous on January 20, 2010 at 9:20 a.m. but Joe's has not fallen behind on rent payments to Paramount. They (Joe's) have been month to month since fulfilling their original 5 year lease term. Paramount Properties has found someone else (a fellow Main Street Greenville Officer to one of Paramount's Owners) who wants that space for himself. Yes, it is a private business matter but it is still very wrong on so many levels. This is NOT good economic developement and NOT a good message to send to those who are or are looking to locate in Greenville. I hope DJ digs into this more and get all the dirty little facts out in the open.
Just like every story that goes on in Greenville there is three sides to this .Broadway Joes, Paramount Properties and the truth. Everyone should wait until all facts are known before making any comments.
Is this new bussiness man the Same person that tried to become the economic developer instead of his elected posistion? Religion and politics do not match up.
I have never been in Broadway Joes but I here it is pretty good cofee and company.I just hate to here they have got to go.Sounds like there is some shady dealings going on.If the stories are true. How many people are employed there?
To begin, I am a loyal Broadway Joes customer. I don't believe Jim or Trish would reveal to customers IF they were having financial difficulties. No one needs to know either way. For whatever reason, their lease wasn't renewed... bottom line. And I sincerely hope they reopen somewhere else. Furthermore, we should not boycott the new business. We should support all local businesses! Greenville is already falling apart. Boycotting it is childish. We do not know how they were able to lease this business space just as we do not know how or why BWJ lost their lease. Anyone with integrity (on either side of the situation) would keep their lips sealed so as to not "bad-mouth" or defame those who are on the other side of the situation; that is the adult thing to do. Too many people are letting their emotions get in the way of good, rational thinking. Let's all be adults.
"Negotiations" When a lease contract is coming to an end and both parties have to come to an agreement on the terms of the new lease. I am sure the building owners was asking for more money and like all other business owners BW Joe's was needing to cut expenses. The cost or terms of the lease could be a major factor to their expenses. Without an agreement the lease is terminated.
Yes, let's get emotional and boycott a new business! Ignore the fact that the people who work there will probably have nothing to do with HOW the business got there. It doesn't matter that they'll have a livelyhood to maintain, they're in a space that used to have a place we liked in it! Screw 'em, says I! Cause that's how logical, intelligent adults act. Seriously. Some of the people in this county are morons.
Anonymous does not equal coward. It equals confusion. I don't care if i know who is speaking or not. I just want to keep the personalities straight.
On topic, too much hearsay for me. I'd rather let someone come forward with the truth. If Joe's situtation is as the owners say, why wouldn't they come out and tell the public somehow? This site is the perfect venue, imo.
C'on people.... it's a coffee shop! It can move and serve the stuff just about anywhere it can find a space. As long as the business is going - who cares where it is?!?
It amazes me how so many get worked up over a coffee business. So many comments and threats of a boycott. Too bad this energy is never focus on a more important cause. Seriously people.
the owner said i could list what i did, but not other details. i honored his request, and now i see that most of the details i knew have been published in the advocate and broadcast on wtgr. so there's nothing for me to add at this point. i, like many other commenters, am sympathetic to the owners.
You could list what you did (as did the DA, which was essentially nothing), and the way it seems is that the Broadway Joe's owners WANT you to feel sympathetic. They want everyone to see the property owner or the new business as the bad guys, yet we don't have the whole story. Talk about playing dirty.
I guess it shouldn't amaze me that the people of this town would not support any new business going into the Palace. Apparently all you Bad-Mouthers have secure jobs and don't worry about the employment rate of this county. Even if this gets a few people off the unemployment role it's a good thing. It's a NEW business something this town needs and doesn't have a lot of coming in. I'm sure if Broadway Joe's lands somewhere else they will be just fine, that is if their business is as prosperous as everyone believes it is.
Thank you, Anonymous Jan 25, 2010 3:08 a.m. That is EXACTLY right. Everything here is speculation, aside from whatever the business owners told DJ that she supposedly could not tell us, at their request. Which would lead us to believe that they might be fabricating or embellishing the reason(s) for their current situation. And look there...I was just SPECULATING. If I didn't know the full story from ALL sides involved, I certainly wouldn't be talking like most of the other people leaving comments.
I don't really care why Broadway Joe's is leaving, closing, moving, whatever the case ends up being. I wasn't in this coffee shop, and if what goes in their place is another coffee shop (as has been speculated), I won't be going their either.
From the "speculation" that has been posted here, to the article in the Advocate, (if there has been any truth anywhere) it doesn't sound like either side has handled things well, or professionally, or whatever term you care to use.
Businesses come, and businesses go. Residents come, and residents go. Some for positive reasons, some for negative reasons, and some just because they have to.
I agree with January 27, 6:38. Patrick you commented "it is what it is". We are talking about a business, peoples way of making an living. Patrick you are an dumbass, and that "is what it is"!
This is terrible news. I love Broadway Joe's.

ReplyDeleteI find it hard to believe they "lost their lease." Usually these events have more to do with the non-payment of rent.

ReplyDeleteNo business ever closed due to rent. You are all failing to see the obvious.
ReplyDeleteWe should fight to keep Broadway Joes ! Yes, boycott whatever idiot goes in there. CO2, here's another project !

Those "details soon" haven't seemed to come so soon, DJ!!! WHERE ARE THEY!
ReplyDeleteI do have details, but the owner asked me not to print them here. I've decided to honor that request. Maybe you can get the Advocate on it ... :)
