The voice of opposition

Now is not the time for this resident, on Martin Street, who is apparently against the levy.

  3. anyone against the levy... what are the reasons?

I don't live in Greenville anymore but own property there that would be affected (tax-wise) by the levy. i can't wrap my hands around what the opposition would be.

  4. I'm also glad to see both sides on here. I wonder how long it will take for the other side to start attacking these people. Like the very first comment. Brings back memories with Obama. Dare don't oppose him or your a racist or a hater. To whoever lives there with the sign. Good for you, way to have courage.

  5. I don't care which way people vote - I know how I will vote (but I'm not sharing it here). What bothers me is to see so many people voicing an opinion without really being completely informed about the entire issue.
There is, like in any ballot, good and bad to everything. But folks, you gotta read up, ask REAL questions, and make a decision.
Just by the looks of this little cheap sign, it looks to me like this person is voting no because of a more personal gripe with someone in the school rather than the issue itself.
    Just my opinion, that's all.

  7. Maybe they don't mean the levy. Maybe they're just against school in general. Maybe it was put up by a kid who's tired of math classes and stuff. I'm leaning towards that one, actually... that marker work is really amateurish. My guess is 4th to 7th grade...

  8. haha ... Tony, I did write "apparently" against the levy.

  9. This is probably a house that just had there taxes assessed by the county. So now there taxes just went up 200 bucks, and if the school levy pases, it will go up another 100 or so.... not sure its the right time to be pushing peoples taxes over the limit.. vote no

  10. Good point Tony...it does look like something a disgruntled kids would do because they didn't study for a test and got a bad grade. Teachers fault, you know! ha ha

  11. I do like how the DJ posts this picture with the title "The Voice of Opposition," where the picture is a homemade sign created to voice their displeasure with the school levy, apparently. Basically posting it as a double entendre so he can poke fun at "The Voice of Opposition" as amateurish, unorganized, and uneducated, while leaving himself an escape route if someone points it out by saying "No, I just wanted to show that people are against the levy."

    Smooth...

  12. Nice try! I'm in favor of the levy - so actually it undermines my own personal interests to advertise an anti-levy sign. But I thought it was interesting, so I put it up anyway. I called it the voice of opposition because I figured it was the only anti-levy sign in town, and the owners are apparently "opposed" to the levy.

You're giving me too much credit for sneakiness.

However, I will point out that I think it's a strategic blunder to have such a high-profile campaign for this levy. The formula for winning this one is big turnout for the supporters - and apathy among the opponents. The high-profile campaign undermines the second part of the equation - and prompts people to create homemade yard signs.

  13. I think its sad that some people in Greenville are so selfish that they would vote against something that we truely need!

    ReplyDelete
  14. DJ, you are correct about the campaign strategy. The CO2 organization has raised the profile of the campaign with town meeting and may have inadvertently rallied the "apathetic".

Timing of when the first payment for new operating tax is unfortunate.

  15. So we all know that there are 2 levys right? One to build the school (the one everyones talking about) and another (no one is talking about) for operating expenses. They either both pass or they both fail from what I understand. Those for these levys should really read the fine print in these. It will really make you thank twice!

You are correct but here is some more truth. 2-levies: 2.89 for building and 0.5 for operating (mandated by the state)for a total of 3.39 mills. All projected taxpayer increases publicized by the school ($118 annually for a house appraised at $100,000) were calculated with the entire 3.39 mills. And yes, one cannot pass unless both pass; or a YES vote is for both and a NO vote is against both.
There has been no attempt to hide this reality, only misunderstanding on the part of some people.

  17. Anonymous January 23, 2010 10:39 AM, Calling anyone that does not support this levy selfish is very wrong. With that logic, any organization that asks for donations and you don't give you are selfish. Have you gave for the Haiti relief? Have you gave to the poeple staving in Africa or other parts of the world? Have you gave to the homeless here in America or other parts of the world? What about the people right here in Greenville or Darke county losing their homes because they lost their jobs? The list could go on for ever. All of the people I pointed out are in great need. The answer is of course not, you don't give money to all these things. No it does not make you selfish either. If people decide not to vote yes for the school levy, it does not make them selfish. I know its not much of an tax increase, but with future tax increase (federal, state, local) it will get to be too much for ppeople to handle.

  18. Think of it this way: Either the Greenville City Schools were trying to be sly and pass both levies on one vote thinking nobody would notice, or those that did notice would have some compassion thinking they wouldn't want to turn down a renewal for operating expenses when GCS is looking for pity for the new school vote, OR GCS was just too stupid to realize that they would have to put that levy on the ballot with this levy.

REGARDLESS, anyone that has any faith in those running GCS are probably the same people that would still have faith in Bernie Madoff handling your money. Dumb it down for you: either GCS is trying to trick you, or GCS is too stupid to know what is going on. Either way, nobody should have any faith in them after this blunder AND THAT IS THE LONG AND SHORT TRUTH OF THE MATTER!

Actually none of the scenarios you put out are on target.

The State of Ohio requires that a 0.5 mill operating levy be put in place in conjunction with the bond levy for a building WHEN STATE FUNDS ACCEPTED. For GCS the state is funding 40% of the core facility costs or approximatly $9 million.

The GCS has put this out with all information. It is easily over looked and understandable that you may have missed this point.

There has been no effort by the district to hide the 0.5 mill operation levy from the community.

In the end, everyone will get the opportunity to yes or no to the levy request.

    ReplyDelete
  20. If GCS missed this point, then the statement about them being too stupid to realize it was mandated stands firm.

    No arguing around that one.

Regardless, doesn't mean I am voting against the levy or anything. Just means the school is not being by people any brighter upstairs than those that bought land they decided they really couldn't put towards the intended use.

  21. School Board Business as Usual…
    • No Mention of a second levy
    • No Date on Signs
    • Special Election costing us more money
Nothing has changed from when they fooled the taxpayers when purchasing the land.

  22. Hey levy observer the last time I checked 9million is not 40 % of 33.3 million learn some math pal.

    ReplyDelete
  23. How about cutting major cost first. Company cars gas credir cards being used for personnal pleasure, too many on staff etc. I can on for hours. Remember the big lie They bought that chunk of land for 1 MILLION dollars, without getting taxpayer approval. AND it was supposed to be big enough for MEGA school. Now the land is only big enough for middle school. Most important don't you think we have enough tax as it is. Senior's are not getting cost of living adjustment for SS. So you the school people want to take more from our seniors. And to all the people that rent, your rent will increase 75.00 a month. I think all property owners that do not live in the district should have the right to vote.

    ReplyDelete
  24. i posted comment #3 I think. I own property in Greenville, though I no longer live there. This levy is a necessity for long-term growth prospects in Greenville. My taxes will likely increase by about $200 per property per year. That is $17/month.

Maybe a better time to address the Junior High will be when more facade falls off and the district gets sued for negligence.

And where do you get the figure that rent will increase $75/month.

I live in a school district now in a home similar in value to what I lived in in Greenville- at that time our taxes were $964/half. Same value home here is $1750/half with a large chunk going to our schools. Check the state stats- Greenville's tax revenue for their schools are in the bottom 5% in the state.

I can do the math - please read again the posting again. The 40% is core facilities. There are items that are not included this definition. The GCS has run several articles identifying those items not eligible for the 40% funding that may be included - ranging from gymnasiums to "green items" such as solar panels, geothermal, etc.

    Just the facts DukeBlackOhio.

  26. I must say, the attitude towards the levy has turned decidedly towards the negative direction after the discovery of the second levy on the ballot.

Now, if those opposed will actually come out in force to vote remains to be seen!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Sorry levy observer but answer me this all these solar panels and geo thermal heat is real expensive is it not?People are all ready upset about the cost of this so why add more to it by useing this expensive stuff?Isnt there cheaper solutions I no there is because Im in the connstruction industry.

  28. A cheaper way is for voters to go vote on 2-2-2010 and vote NO

  29. If the shcool system installs green technology to save on the operating costs, they will just squander that savings away rather than giving us a tax break down the road when they see the results anyway. SOmeone higher up on the chain will get to take more vacations or something when most people in this town can't even afford a vacation. I see it this way lets suck them dry and then blow their money irrationally.

  30. This levy is about giving the kids in 5th through 8th grade a better place to get an education. Receiving it in a Mobile Home is not a fond memory. Ask yourself that questions. For most kids these should be the most memorable days of their lives. When they tell their kids stories of when they were in 5th grade it shouldn't involve getting an education in a mobile home. It should be about moving into an awesome building because the people of Greenville believed they were worth the sacrifice of a few dollars. Think of when you were in school and what made it for you. The idea that the money would be blown irrationally is absurd and an uneducated prediction at best.

  31. Anonymouts @ 11:36

I agree. However it is the 2nd graders in the modular (or mobile) units. I'd prefer a K-4 or a K-6 solution to what is being proposed. The district needs to tell us the plan to address needs for the younger children.

  32. Look at the budget and tell me they don't squander the money they have at hand. that is not an uneducated guess it is just the facts.

My parents have told me of alot of fond menories when they were in grade school, even my grandmother has talked about her school. They all loved their school. Guess what? It was an one room brick building. All children were in the same room. New school or old school, children will have goog and bad memories of school. So the thought of children not having fond memories because their in an old school building is absurd.

  34. This is what is wrong with society now a days. It has to be new stuff to make it good. Maybe we have had it to good and that is what is wrong with country right now. If maybe things would have been good enough, we wouldn't have put ourselves in this financial mess.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Both 2nd graders and 5th graders (at South Middle) are in mobile homes. There are many reasons for a better school. Not just the memories of education in a mobile home. Better education is a better enviroment for everyone in the community. And if you live in the area and dont want to pay the taxes because you just dont care. I challenge you to move. Get out, find someone where people dont care about their kids and community. The people of this area are changing and they want to see a difference. Better education makes better people and I am all for that.

  36. maybe the owner of this sign doesnt have the big check book like the greenville city schools. they worked with what they have, maybe some of the kids could have made sign instead of us tax payers pay for the signs

    ReplyDelete
  37. Taxpayers didn't pay for the signs! Citizens for Quality schools raises money from individuals, local businesses, and also vendors that currently do work for the school system. This money is used to pay for the bond issue campaign which includes the signs!

If you read any of the literature you would see the disclaimer printed on every piece of literature!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Paying for the campaign, yes. Special Elections costs are paid by whom?
