Reconciliation and the filibuster: then and now

So said Joe Biden: "I pray God when the Democrats take back control we don't make the kind of naked power grab you are doing." Video here.

  1. i'm shocked that rhetoric is reversed when the roles are reversed.

nothing changes, regardless of who is in which position.

  2. i think it is ok to be used on certain issues that wont directly affect the country or econemy. But when it comes to healthcare i think that they couldnt be more wrong by even talking about using the 51 votes to get something passed. This bill will directly affect every american whether it be male, female,or child.

  4. With children what the Republicans threaten is called "temper tantrum." with adults it is called "filibuster."

  5. Either way it is stupid being stupider. Just do all you can to keep from getting anything done. If it is not our or my idea it is no good. By all means don't try to negotiate a workable compromise.
Even when unions and companies can not come to an aggreement there argitrators assigned to get the differences resolved.

  6. I really am getting tired of the constant abuse of Darke Journal partisan politics and using this column as a way to ATTEMPT to further divide us s a nation, as a people in order to promote "their" agenda! Don't others get tired of this and simply want EVERYONE on ALL LEVELS to do what they are elected to due regardless of political party? Good lord STOP posting these types of partisan BS commentaries to simply stir the pot even more and fuel the fire! We have enough of that already going on in DC & elsewhere we don't need it here in good ole Darke County as well ...

  7. The only compromise the Democrats want is for the other side to give in to their way. If you people really think these bureaucrats give a darn about your health welfare, you had better guess again. It is about control, it is about power. They want to take over the industry, Socialism, one sector at a time!

  9. It's past time for the Ds to be done with bipartisanship and pass healthcare. They have large majorities. IF they can get their own house in order and pass something, they should do it and forget about the republicans. If it doesn't work, they'll take the blame and the Rs can take over congress and change it. The same would be true in reverse. Bipartisanship is a mirage. They've already wasted too much time on it--a failure of leadership by BHO & crew, imho. I am convinced that people don't really care about bipartisanship, anyway. It's just something they say. The bottom line is they really just want something done about their problems. If a law works, it won't matter how it was passed.

  10. Anon. 8:04 a.m. - I agree. Just trying to keep up with Boehner's "demands" concerning health care and today's summit is comical. The bill is too big, no wait, it's too small, POTUS said CPAN would record debates, no wait it's a setup - cameras will be there blah blah blah.
As to poster "Pitsburg" - reconciliation has been used 22 times in the last 20 years, 16 by repubs. Healthcare has greatly benefited from the use of reconciliation - just check out the R in COBRA. Also, thanks to this rule of congress, the country has CHIP, Hospice benefits, cancer screenings, nursing home protection and more.

  11. Three questions on healthcare badly need answering, honestly (if that is even possible).
    1. Is the Canadian healthcare system good or bad?
    2. How can people in this country vow to never let the government take over healthcare when over 50% of Americans get their healthcare from the government already?
    3. We charge law enforcement with the responsibility of protecting public safety at whatever cost; do we the people have the same obligation to provide affordable healthcare to all citizens?

  12. 7:49, When the average Canadians and Canadian officials fly to Miami, Fl. to get their heart surgery done should be the answer for question # 1. The only answer that I can think of for your question 2 is that people that are sucking off of the government tax dollars, for any reason, should have their right to vote taken away until they can prove that they are not. Question 3, has me puzzled. Do you have an obligation to pay for my healthcare, if you do, would you, please? Or, do I have the right to come to your house and force you to pay for my healthcare at the point of a perverbial gun? Do I have the right to force you to buy my groceries because I am too lazy to provide for myself? The Democrats, Liberals are trying to tell us that healthcare is a right. Sorry, it is not. It boils down to trying to buy homeowners insurance after your house burns down. Everyone has their particular story, but, I have had health insurance my whole working career, except when I was layed-off for a year and a half, and yes, I took a chance and did not buy it, I was young and dumb and healthy. Had something happened, it would have been my problem. I lucked out. The issue of pre-existing conditions is a little tricky. Most of the stories that have been touted if the truth be known, the denied persons probably did not have previous insurance or had a lapse because they let it go. There has to be more than we are being told. As long as I have had no laps of insurance coverage, I have never been denied when I had to change insurance. What do you think?

First I do not believe average Canadians fly to Miami and plunk down 6 figures. I'll be those that do are wealthy or officials. Reports say that many Americans have medical procedures performed in Canada because it is cheaper. I still think an unbiased answer to the question is badly needed.
As to those "sucking off the government", most are former working Americans over 65. Forty-six years ago we decided to implement Medicare. Do you advocate welching on this promise? My point is that over half of Americans are on healthcare run by the government, yet people argue that we don't want healthcare run by the government. Seems like a stupid argument.
The lsst question speaks to the philosophical role of members of a society, through government, on whether a responsibility exists to their fellow man; or to let him "root hog or die." If our collective decision is to have healthcare evolve into a luxury for only the wealthiest or luckiest; then so be it. We as Americans must answer the question, stick by the answer, and not continue to benefit personally and privately while condemning it pubically.

  14. I will stand corrected. Most of the average Canadians that come to the U.S. for healthcare drive, they do not fly. I have met some of them through my parents.

Medicare is not government run healthcare. The healthcare is ,so far, a private industry. Medicare is a taxpayer funded government healthcare management firm that mandates how much they will pay for treatments.

The people that "suck off society", I will call "welfare rats". Most are on their 3rd generation and those are the ones that I am refering to, and I DO mind paying for their existance. You can say that is not christian or whatever. I just believe you have to attmpt to help yourself, first, before you ask for assistance from someone else and you DO NOT have a right to DEMAND anything from me or anyone else, tax dollars, healthcare or the like.

  15. But healthcare would still be private as it is today. The only change would be more people covered like medicare. The primary detriment would be to insurance companies, whom I regard as just above your "welfare rats." I have never been a proponent of socialized medicine, but now when faced with continually spiraling costs and unaffordability, it simply becomes the lesser of two very great evils.

  16. Too bad for you. Everyone that wants to live in a free nation should resist that very mindset. This is how the Socialists win, one so-called crisis at a time.

  17. No, too bad for you. The right wing has totally pervaded your reasoning.
