Schreyer Claims Congressman Boehner Has Abandoned The People In The 8th District Of Ohio

EATON, Ohio (February 2, 2010) – “John Boehner has abandoned the voters in the 8th District of Ohio,” claims Manfred R. Schreyer, the Republican challenger to Mr. Boehner’s seat in the upcoming primary election.

Pointing to campaign finance reports that show Representative Boehner headlined more than 100 golf related events in 2009, Schreyer claims that Mr. Boehner spends more time on the golf course than working on the issues that plague the district. He states, “The people didn’t send John Boehner to Washington to spend two days a week on the golf course.”

Schreyer just released a video on his campaign website, www.imwithmanfred.com, featuring an interview with William V. York III, a resident of New Paris, Ohio. Situated on the Ohio border near Richmond, Indiana, New Paris has lacked the infrastructure necessary to attract business development and jobs, and cannot support bond financing with the existing tax base. “The infrastructure exists on the Indiana side, so Route 40 is already a thriving commercial center. But it all disappears when you cross the border because there’s no water or sewer,” says Schreyer.

Starting in the late 1990s and as recently as 2008, York began contacting Congressman Boehner’s office for assistance, and was told that even though the potential return is estimated to be hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars in tax revenue, the $4 million investment required sounded too much like an earmark request. Representative Boehner has refused to pursue earmarks since his first term in office.

“There’s more ways to develop opportunities like this,” Schreyer stated, “but rather than exploring other solutions, Mr. Boehner simply refuses to help this community.” On his campaign website, Schreyer links to a USDA press release dated January 14, 2010, which announced $49 million dollars in direct grant funding to communities throughout the State of Alaska for water and sewage infrastructure development. Some individual communities were awarded nearly $6 million with the express purpose of creating jobs.

Schreyer says, “We pay our taxes to Washington like everyone else, and if Mr. Boehner won’t help us create jobs by exploring ways to develop opportunities like the one in New Paris, then I will.”

  1. Mr Boehner comes across tv as not being for the people but for his party. I have seen him use the term "Oh my God" and make some very stupid faces when addressed by Democrats. He needs to work for all the people, not just Republicans. I wonder if he is capable of making a decision on his own.

  2. Boehner is better suited for golfing than acting like a house rep. representing the taxpayers, I'll bet he sucks up pretty well to his big business puppet masters.
I am waiting for Boehner to whine about the latest proposed budget and resulting deficit, he didn't have any problems or issues with passing budgets with 400 billion dollar deficits year after year.

  3. Yeah! Big business puppet masters! Woo! You hit that Boehner hard "Guest #1!" And just one minute after "Anonymous!" Coincidences! Boehner actually helped cut billions from the budget when he was a committee chairman. He voted against bills that were loaded with earmarks (you know, the wasteful spending his opponent here is talking up). And he's been "whining" about the latest budget and deficit because it's out of control. Does Manfred opponent support the Obama budget?

  4. I thought Boehner would get caught up in Larry Flynt's sting a few years back when Flynt offered $1 million for information on politicians having illicit affairs.

  5. Golf? Explains the abnormal tan!

  6. You must remember all those years of passing deficit budgets was under his party and that is ok. Now under the other party he will comment that all of this foolish spending must stop at once.

  7. So you fools want to put an unknown car salesman in the 8th as a junior representative at the expense of possibly having Boehner as Speaker, if we win the House back? Baby out with the bathwater?

    ReplyDelete
  8. He originally ran favoring term limits and promising not to be a career politician. There are two big broken promises. He doesn't take earmarks. While that in itself is admirable, how does it help this district when all other Congressmen take them for their constituents' benefir?

And you, Anonymous 10:29AM, would help perpetuate a politician for the sake of glorification of the Republican party? That attitude is the paramount reason that this country is in it's current shape.

  10. boehner is a joke.If he said he wouldnt be a carreer politician than that was just an out right lie because that is what he is.He is on the news more than the governor.

  11. All you need is a pretty face, bedroom eyes and be a republican and you are IN!

  12. Well, now that I know this, I am going to run for congress.

  13. You also have to be able to take lots of expense paid trips to Florida and places farther south, paid for by drug companies and Insurance companies.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Boehner is tan enough - let someone else enjoy the trips to Florida.

Seriously, all politicians are pretty much cut out of the same cloth

  15. I'd like to point out that the liberals controlled Congress from 2006 on--that's Speaker Pelosi, my friends, not Minority Leader Boehner. Congress is in charge of the budget and the deficit. Bush was president, but the House was Democrat. Hopefully that will change in 2010 and 2012.

  16. Guess what Barb: just because things change, does not make them any different. Maybe someday people will begin to see this truth.

  17. People don't think for themselves anymore. I blame a lot of this on talk radio. I am not saying that I am against talk radio, but the some of the stuff they come up with is absurd. A large number of people have made the decision that anything that has to do with Govt. is bad and should be eliminated. The reason for my opening statement is that these people are saying this as they are cashing social security checks, subsidy checks, using medicare, public schools, and all of this comes from the taxpayers money, administered by the government. I am not a fan of big government but when I see the hypocrisy of people who are Rush and Hannity worshippers I wonder why don't you think for yourselves. Has the American people became too lazy to think now.

    ReplyDelete
  18. People who call themselves comic book names must not care about the "truth" too much. At least I use my real name. Betcha' if any of you did the same, the conversation would become more civil. For instance: what does it matter how much tan someone has? Does that affect his job performace ?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Perhaps the tan is a side benefit from his many hours spent on the golfcourse; or maybe he is just trying to emulate the President. Obama did say that he and Boehner had something in common, that they were both persons of color. Maybe he just wants to perpetuate the compliment.

  20. Can Schreyer point to a source on this golf course stuff? I read an article that Boehner only hosts a few golf outings every year (not 100) to raise money. Why do you think that's a problem? Is he the only person in Ohio who golfs? So far the only thing I hear is you don't like golf or free trade and you think he should do earmarks. What are your policy differences?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I dunno Barb, you seemed to think that Manfred's German accent would affect his performance in the last topic about this run. Schreyer links to the golf sources on his campaign website and I verified it myself by looking up campaign finances on opensecrets.org

I dont get the idea that Schreyer only wants earmarks from the video he's got on his site about the USDA grant money funding the exact kind of project in alaska that New Paris needed. But even if it were about earmarks, it seems appropriate that for every federal dollar that we send to DC it would be nice to get at least that much back to the local area. We have to pay the money anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Guess I didn't know he had a German accent---well---that changes everything ! By all means let's elect him as our Representative!!!! What better qualification can there be?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Anonymous - what's the link? Post it here. If you say Boehner held 100 golf events, prove it. As for grants, anyone can contact Boehner's office and work on getting a grant. Go here: http://johnboehner.house.gov/ConstituentServices/grants.htm But Boehner doesn't do earmarks which Schreyer seems to want, even when we have a $12 trillion debt.

    ReplyDelete
  24. It is a fact that Boehner was for term limits and against "career politicians.
That is until he bellied up to the taxpayer trough.
Barb 2006-2008 is two years, what was his excuse for the huge deficits before that?

    ReplyDelete
  25. This administration is already spending way too much of our money…No earmarks is principled and right! I'm glad Boehner's sticking to his guns and fighting for not just my future but the future of the kids I'll have someday.

I'm proud Boehner might be the next speaker of the house and I certainly don't want to replace him with this guy.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Guest #1, Boehner voted against a lot of spending before 2006-2008. He even cut billions from the budget when he was a committee chairman. And besides, you just made a HUGE argument for Boehner: while he is talking about cutting the deficit Schreyer is talking about more pork spending.

    ReplyDelete
  27. guest #1:

Boehner is not "bellying up" to the taxpayer trough. He owned a thriving business before he got in politics. His wife works---always has. What were the deficits prior to 2006 that were not war caused? So, you want this guy to take
Boehner's place at the trough? Why? Do you get a cut?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Boehner isn't sticking to his guns. He's voted for deficit creating programs like TARP right along with Pelosi and Barney Frank. He didn't seem to care too much about the GOP driven budget deficit that was already happening before 2006. Now all of a sudden, he (and a bunch of other Republicrats) are concerned about losing their jobs, so he's supposedly pro balanced budget and trying to create jobs? Where was he when he was promoting free trade policies that benefit less than 1% of all businesses that export? Those policies hurt the middle class as a whole, which represents the customer base for 100% of the rest of the small businesses. You fools that thing these global interest representing GOP neo-cons like Boehner mean YOUR business when they say pro-business. They're not talking about the local shops, attorneys, accountants, hair salons, etc... If they were, they wouldn't be promoting policies that hurt the larger middle class as a whole.

  29. to Jerry... Federal Election Commission filings are public record. Here's an article from Politico one of the biggest political news websites in the US.

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1109/29881.html

    ReplyDelete
  30. Anonymous - right, that Politico link doesn't say he held 100 golf outings. Thank you for helping correct the matter. If you still think it was 100 golf outings I urge you to provide a link that says so. And yes, Boehner voted for TARP. I wouldn't have, but conservatives were split on it, including Paul Ryan who wrote the GOP budget last year. To say Boehner didn't care about the deficit before 2006 is simply inaccurate. He helped cut billions from the budget before and he's supporting plans to cut the deficit now. His opponent wants to keep wasteful spending and shut off free trade. Clear difference.

  31. Anonymous - Citizens Against Government Waste congratulated Boehner in February 2006 after Congress passed "the Deficit Reduction Act, for which we know you worked tirelessly to become law." And they applauded him for "as someone who has rejected earmarks" while outlining the problem with pork-barrel spending, which Schreyer wants to continue.

  32. I can't believe this one schreyer press release has resulted in 30 comments.

to mr. schreyer, best of luck - and good for you to run for office & particularly to take on a popular incumbent like John Boehner. these sorts of challenges keep our representatives from getting complacent. make a good showing and you will set yourself up for future runs, maybe for this very seat.

to the boehner people, please! relax. there is zero chance of boehner losing. just support your guy and don't be so defensive ... :)

  33. jerry the politico article said he HEADLINED over 100 golf outings.

What do you suppose "headlined" means? That mean's he's the man. It's no secret that he uses golf outings to raise funds for the RNC through his PAC. What is your point here? Are you really arguing that he DOESN'T? FEC filings are public. All someone has to do is go look and see how much non-district related work he's doing for everyone else.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Since when has it been a duty for any member of congress to aquire "earmarks" as part of their job?

Are you guys sure you're Republicans?

Who cares if he raises money for the NRCC, wouldn't that be something a Republican Leader would do?

If you all are Republicans, don't you want to see the GOP in the majority?
