Wayne Twp. Trustees Hosting the Newest Recycling Bin Location

The Darke County Solid Waste District is pleased to announce that county residents now have another “NEW” location to drop off their recyclables. The Wayne Township House in Versailles now has a recycling bin for the public to use. Residents in the Versailles area will find the recycling bin at 535 N West St.

The Solid Waste District has placed a Rumpke drop-box for the collection of "commingled recyclables at this “NEW” location. Commingled means that recyclable materials are not required to be separated but can be mingled together prior to being collected for recycling. This is true for all recyclables, except paper, which should be kept separate in a paper bag among the other recyclables in the drop box.

Rumpke Waste Removal Services has all of the drop-box contracts for the collection of recyclables within the solid waste district. The recyclable materials that Rumpke collects from the drop boxes are taken to their materials recovery facility in Dayton, where they are automatically separated at the rate of 15 tons per hour. Once sorted, the recyclables are either baled and loaded onto semi trailers or are loaded loose into large containers for shipment to paper mills or secondary processing plants. At the paper mills and processing plants, they are shredded, pelletized, or melted down into materials that can be used in the manufacturing of new paper and products.

To help the residents of Darke County know what materials can be recycled, the solid waste district has compiled the following information:

Plastics that can be recycled are jugs, soft drink, shampoo, and food, laundry and detergent bottles with a triangle containing a 1 or 2 on the bottom. Not accepted for recycling are wide mouth containers such as margarine bowls " or whipped topping containers, plastic forks, spoons and knives, cassette and compact disc cases, children's toys, oil jugs, plastic bags and buckets.

Glass that can be recycled includes clear, brown, green and blue glass bottles and jugs. (Remove caps and rinse out. Labels may be left on.) Not accepted for recycling are window panes, mirrors, light bulbs, drinking glasses, mugs or cooking glassware.

Aluminum, steel, and bimetal beverage and food cans be recycled as well as empty aerosol cans (do not crush or, puncture aerosol cans.) Not accepted for recycling are pots, pans, coat hangers and scrap steel, which should be taken to a scrap dealer.

Most paper is accepted for recycling, including junk mail, direct mail, window envelopes, flyers, file folders, magazines, catalogs, telephone books, small paperboard boxes such as cereal and snack boxes, and newspapers, including glossy inserts, which should be kept separate in a paper bag among the other recyclables.

Although cardboard is recyclable, it should not be placed in the drop boxes because of its volume and bulk. Instead, it should be taken directly to Rumpke's Transfer Station, where it will be accepted free of charge. Used pizza boxes are not recyclable because food is a contaminate to the recycling of paper.

Drink and juice boxes, as well as gable-top milk cartons, are accepted for recycling as long as they are not wax coated. Not accepted for recycling are frozen-food cartons, frozen juice concentrate containers, straws, wax-coated products, such as yogurt cups, and waxed paper. Absolutely no electronics are to be placed in the drop boxes. These may be taken to the solid waste district's annual collections.

  1. Just wondering, does Greenville or Greenville Twp. have a drop off place like this?

  2. There is a drop box at Rumpke on Jaysville St John Rd and a bin across from Auto Zone for paper and cardboard only in the City.
