“According to our research, the first hooked rugs in North America were made in the 18th century. Women made hooked rugs in their homes or in environments much like quilting bees by using strips of cloth scraps from clothes, rags and sacks, or spun wool,” said Becky Dynes, Outreach Manager for the Friends of Bear’s Mill. “To highlight the theme of National Preservation Month in May, ‘Old is the New Green,’ we asked Angie to make our rug with 100% recycled wool,” Ms. Dynes stated.
The raffle is being held to raise funds to support the Friends of Bear’s Mill mission to provide a rich cultural experience and community-oriented events including educational tours, demonstrations and nature walks while preserving the Mill’s historical significance and natural beauty.
Ms. Ditmer will be demonstrating the art of wool rug hooking at the Mill’s Spring Open House on Sunday, May 2 at 2:00 p.m. The hours of the open house are Saturday, May 1 and Sunday, May 2, from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.
The rug will be on display and raffle tickets for sale at the Mill throughout the summer during regular Mill store hours, 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sundays.
