Wave baseball goes 2-1 in the Ft. Loramie Invitational this past weekend

Greenville went 2-1 on the weekend playing in the Fort Loramie Invitational, finishing 2nd overall after consecutive wins over Minster and state-ranked Tipp City landed them in the championship game against host Fort Loramie. Unfortunately, with the Greenville Senior Prom occurring Saturday night the Wave watched 8 starters leave for a "Night in New Delhi" and their JV replacements were a bit over matched by the Division 5 powerhouse Redskins, losing 14-2 to stop the win streak at 8.

Recap
In a game that Greenville dominated through 6 innings, a collective sigh of relief came in the 7th when Tyler Zimmerman camped under a fly ball to right field to record the last out.

Heading into the 7th, Greenville led a tough Minster team 5-1 on the heels of a strong pitching performance by senior Derek Kagey. When he exited following the 6th, he had lost a no-hit bid just an inning before but was beginning to accumulate a high pitch count. The Wave answered with the hard-throwing sophomore Zimmerman, but in 11 pitches he found the strike zone just three times before returning to right field in favor of sophomore Storm Wolter. Following a single to his first batter and a sacrifice fly by the next, the score was suddenly 5-3 before Minster's 8th batter lined out to end the contest.

Greenville had scored prior by an RBI single by Burk and an RBI walk by Shields in the 2nd, and then in the 4th on a 2-RBI single by Leis and an RBI double by Shields.

Recap
A large crowd gathered at the Fort Loramie Invitational to watch a matchup between Division 2 powerhouses Greenville and Tipp City, and for the fans that stayed to brave the wet conditions they were treated to a game that saw Greenville score twice in the bottom of the 6th, breaking a 1-1 tie to the championship game.

Greenville ace Matt Orth picked up his third win on the season, going the distance and allowing only 3 hits while striking out 4 with no earned runs. Tipp City starter Kyle Stover nearly matched Orth's performance through 5, however would run into problems before being replaced in the Wave's last at bat.

Greenville scored in the second inning after consecutive singles by Tyler Zimmerman and Lee Keaser gave the Wave baserunners at 1st and 2nd with 1 out. Storm Wolter then hit a ball deep in the hole at short that he was able to beat out at 1st to avoid the double play, which in turn allowed a hustling Zimmerman to score the game's first run.

Tipp City came back to tie Greenville in the top half of the 5th by loading the bases following two singles and a walk, then with 2 outs Carter Langdon dribbled a slow ground ball that made it's way up the arm of the Wave shortstop which allowed their run to score.

After a quiet response in the 5th, the Wave started the 6th with back-to-back singles by Marc Shields and Matt Orth who were able to move up a base because of a wild pitch. With one out, Keaser hit a ball deep enough in right-center field to score Shields giving Greenville the lead, but would not be all as Greenville catcher Dan Edwards then laced a single to left that scored Orth putting Greenville ahead by the final tally of 3-1.

Game #3, Saturday 5:00

Box Score
GHS: 2 - 5 - 1; 1 in the 4th, 1 in the 5th

Offense
Tyler Kuhn: 1-3, RBI
Joe Snyder: 1-3, R
Sam Jones: 1-1, 2B, R

Pitching
Tyler Zimmerman: 1.3 IP (L, 0-3), 3 H, 4 BB, 7 ER
Storm Wolter: .2 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 HBP, 6 ER
Reese Jones: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 K, 1 ER

Recap
The final game wasn't exactly the punctuation you would expect after a big win against Tipp City, but it was an excellent chance to see some of the underclassmen perform at the varsity level with 8 starters absent for prom.

Fort Loramie hit the ball well against the Wave pitchers, but capitalized greatly by wild pitches and passed balls. Zimmerman and Wolter struggled to find the strike zone before giving way to freshman Reese Jones, who was the beneficiary of two fine defensive plays and an inning of bunts as Fort Loramie attempted to quicken the game before the rains came.

Greenville's scoring came once in the 4th as well as once in the 5th. In the 4th, Joe Snyder led off the inning with a solid line drive and later came around to score on a base hit by Jason Howard. In the 5th, sophomore Sam Jones doubled off the base of the right-center fence on the first pitch he saw in a varsity uniform and would come around to score on sophomore Tyler Kuhn's first varsity single and RBI.

The varsity record now sits at 10-7 on the year after starting 2-6, but does not currently have a chance at improving upon that record until hosting Northmont for a doubleheader this Saturday (5/1) at noon.

  1. Glad to hear that both the baseball and softaball teams have been doing well this season. I'm even more impressed that the coaches were kind/smart enough to allow the boys to leave the tournament to attend the prom if they wished to do so. Cool.
