DarkeJournal reader LL wants you to get this free bumper sticker
Actually, she probably doesn't. But our friends at NewsBusters.org are giving these things away for free. Just click on the image and fill out a short form (you will also be signing a petition).
This liberal media thing is funny to me. I remember before the 2006 election Karl Rove dismissed all the talk about the impending GOP doom. He said something about how the pollsters and media had their numbers and he had THE numbers. It's as though conservatives think there is some hidden truth that we would all see if not for the media blinding us with their bias.
Conservatives' use of "media bias" is simply shooting the messenger because you can't defend the message. If anything, the biggest media lapse of the last decade was the media's failure to stand up to the Bush-Cheney Iraq war machine. Their complicity in that mistake has cost us dearly. Those darn media and their neo-conversative bias.
Now, let me go soak up some fair and balanced coverage from those anchor models on Fox.
Why don't you just call this site the Darke County Republican Journal and be honest with the people? It started out to be a good site for all people from Darke Co. to get the latest news as it happened.
I've been away for awhile, only to read my name taken in vain. Ironically, after reading the comments, this made my day. Thanks, dj. Oh, and your bumper stickers? They'd serve a much better purpose if placed over the mouths of some of your "fair and balanced" media, like Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, Fox News, etc.......
DJ: Love the lattes reference. I know you convervatives think you're tough guys--especially if you can send other people to fight your wars for you. You strike me as a latte kind of guy, now that I think about it.
For the record, I'm not a latte drinker. Make my coffee black and strong. And, I do wish I knew the rest of these friends. I have a feeling there are quite a few progressives in this town, but because of a fear of reprisal, we tend to keep quiet about our political beliefs.
Ya, about the time this county became so republican is about the time it started going to hell. However, I actually think failure makes people become republican, not that republicans cause failure.
DJ: Progressive means forward thinking--think Darke County and then try to think of the exact opposite and you're in the right neighborhood.
dj, I didn't know this was a test on political ideologies, but I'll play along. I use the term as a synonym for liberal, but I know that's probably wrong. You are welcome to lecture me if you wish. What I do know is that this county is ruled by republicans, and things aren't looking so hot here right now. The republicans I know don't like to pay taxes, but they still like the amenities that taxes bring. They love it when they can get a grant, but of course they don't care to pay toward the creation of those grants. So in other words, they like to spend, but never want to give. Now, go right ahead and rip me apart.
There are no defined principles. Progressives' main objective is to change the status quo. If the country is isolationist, they are expansionists; if the country's economy is industrial, they favor a return to agrarianism. They favor small government in a time of big government programs and government intervention in big money-markets. They are not revolutionaries because they believe in American democracy and the responsibility of government to address the needs of its citizens.
I will give you credit for one thing. Most people I know who call themselves progressives do so only to avoid identifying themselves as liberals and/or democrats. You are clearly a liberal and not afraid to call yourself that. I can respect that.
Our local leaders may or may not have droped the ball, but the fate of the county is very depndent upon what's going on at the state and national level. Democrats have controlled cogress, and every state office (except auditor) since the 2006 elections. And yes - this aren't looking so hot here right now.
LL makes valid points. Another telltale issue is the proposed new courthouse (further illuminated by Mr. Wright's latest letter to the editor) This cannot be denied: if you build bigger government buildings (like building bigger garages) they will soon be filled. For all the local flap in the media, and this site, about the need to reduce government; where are the protests about a multi-million new government building, financed by 100% public debt, and now revealed as the desire of one man?
Anonymous May 23, 2010 4:33 PM. I am a conservative and a republican. I did not send anyone to war, but I fought in Iraq in 1991. How about you mister anonymous, did you fight for your country?
Kirkpatrick: I'm talking about Bush/Cheney. You know, the guys who start wars and call everyone who questions them traitors. These are the guys who got deferments and cushy national guard gigs when it was their time to serve in Vietnam.
For the record, I have never been in the military and, while I applaud anyone who has served, I believe the best way to honor those serving (including members of my family) is to be smart about foreign policy and not put soldiers in harm's way unless it's absolutely necessary. That is a test that Bush/Cheney failed miserably.
DJ: I'm a liberal/progressive. I don't accept the premise of your challenge and actually think the problem with conversatives is that, in a complicated world, they can reduce their beliefs to five bumper sticker slogans. But, here you go: 1) Government is the answer to some of our biggest problems. 2) Regulation of industry is necessary. 3) Social equality is a moral imperative. 4) Not all taxes are bad/we don't pay too much tax. 5) Protecting the environment is good. 6) Homosexuals are not a threat to marriage. 7) Judges are not legislating from the bench. 8) The rights afforded criminal defendants protect the innocent, not just the guilty. 9) The media is not liberally biased. 10) Illegal immigrants are not to blame for my lack of success in life. 11) Not everyone on welfare is lazy. 12) The government is not trambling my freedom. 13) Educating our children is a top priority. 14) Providing health care for our people is a moral imperative. 15) Big business takes care of itself; the consumer/employee/environment must be protected against its power. Oops, I overshot.
Anon May 24, 8:24 a.m. and LL: so good to hear from you.
After reading comments on a variety of subjects in Darke Journal, I was beginning to wonder about the the place I call home. There is a difference between being affiliated with a certain political point of view and just being mean and nasty. All I ask is - put yourself in someone else's shoes for once. And while you are at it, feel free to return the grants, the extended unemployment, give up the COBRA at the reduced price, and quit saying with one side of your mouth that you want little to no government involvement in business and moan out of the other side that the President isn't doing enough with BP.
During the presidential election when the local paper ran articles of opposing viewpoints on the candidates and issues, I ran into many who agreed with the liberal slant and wondered - where and why are you hiding? Are there secret liberal meetings going on around here?
One more thing. What exactly is the Liberal/Mainstream/Lamestream Media? When I read newspapers and/or watch the main channels across the country, I feel I'm getting the facts of the story. I feel I'm smart enough to distinguish the front page from the editorial page and I know MSNBC and Fox have their own agendas. So, please explain.
"What exactly is the Liberal/Mainstream/Lamestream Media? When I read newspapers and/or watch the main channels across the country, I feel I'm getting the facts of the story."
You have to be kidding, right? The MSM is pretty much a joke IMHO, decent journalism is rare as rain in the desert anymore.
I find it a shame that people actually believe what media like CNN, MSNBC...are telling them. The only ones who could watch without thier blood beginning to boil are those who are to lazy to find the facts themselves. Or to question what they have reported. No, they just watch, drink the koolaid and then post like they know whats going on. Its a shame. I believe those are the people who actually believed Obama and still want to think he is some sort of God. Thats why they are at the bottom of the ratings. Otherwise they couldn't swallow the garbage they throw at them. I thought we had smarter people than that...and to keep watching the lies and manipulaion and indoctrination and BELIEVING it,is just plain sad.
6:29AM: I am amazed by people like you. This liberal media thing is an excuse. If anyone is drinking any koolaid, it's you. Your comment is straight out of Sean Hannity's playbook. Just because liberals don't see it the way you do doesn't mean we're drinking the koolaid and it doesn't mean we think Obama is God--or the "annointed one" as your buddy likes to call him.
What does it say to you that the more educated people become, the more likely they are to be democrats? What does it say to you that the least educated parts of the country are the red states?
I hate to tell you this but the people of Darke County are not very educated and they are very republican. It's very possible that what you KNOW to be true is completely wrong and there's a whole world out there that you just don't understand.
Don't get me wrong. Conversativism has some very good ideas. And, there are some brilliant conservatives. People that regurgitate what they heard on Sean Hannity are not among them. And, it's difficult to listen to them call others lazy idiots.
Anon 9:52 a.m. I so agree. As stated in a prior remark, we all know MSNBC and Fox, and others, have an agenda - and we watch as such. But I must say, at least a few ask what I call the "second question" (ala: "what do you read?" or "do you really feel private businesses should be allowed to put up a sign denying certain people?"
However, those who ask the "second question" are often bashed as unfair and "with a liberal agenda." Baloney in my opinion.
This will set off a firestorm here: Jon Stewart always asks the "second question" and in a more educated way than many "journalists" and he gets mocked as only being a comedian. Did anyone see our own Ken Blackwell on his show? Also, Dr. Rachel Maddow (like Stewart) always backs up her reports with facts you can see - clips, articles, etc., yet she is blasted as a liberal whatever.
So to Anon 6:29 a.m. - please - use factcheck.org after every FOX show you seem to think so highly of. Make sure the film clips actually go with the story at hand.
This is great----I never REALLY knew what liberals believed ! My definition of the difference is much simpler. As a conservative, I strongly believe that every individual should be encouraged---maybe even forced---to be able to stand up and take care of himself/herself. And be responsible for their actions--- no blaming "society", etc. For example: I see the African-Americans (whom we used to call Negroes---a perfectly respectable term, by the way---they are either Africans or Americans) being told constantly by their leaders (who keep their rarified position in this way) that they are "victims". These seem to me to be liberal, and flawed causes.
no way, I'm in love with Rachel Madow:)

ReplyDeleteDidn't know there were any non-conservatives in the county - Good to hear from you!
ReplyDeleteI heartily echo the last comment.
ReplyDeleteJust remember, many Democrats in this county are conservative where it counts. Far more than most Republicans.
ReplyDeletemaybe you guys could all get together sometime for lattes and bash george bush a little more. good times! :)
ReplyDeleteNobody mentioned his name. Aren't you a little overly-sensitive about your last leader?
ReplyDeleteLL.
ReplyDeleteLOL! I don't think there would be enough stickers to keep Beck's big mouth closed
