Lady Wave softball advances

Wednesday afternoon at Northmont High School , the Lady Wave won their first regional game since 2007, with an exciting come-from-behind 5-3 win over Kings High School (at Kings Mill near Kings Island ). Kings had a 26-6 record and came into the game with three straight shutouts (10-0, 10-0, and 5-0 over tough Hamilton Ross). The Wave broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ashley Hanes’ base hit over the first base bag down the right field line, scored designated runner Kami Berner. The 1-0 lead was short-lived when Kings scored three times in the fifth, when the ball took some bounces away from the Wave infielders. With the Wave trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth with two outs and none on, six consecutive Wave batters reached base with a combination of hits and walks. The Wave scored 4 times, to lead 5-3. Jordyn Fisherback pitched another excellent game, retiring the Kings Knights in the seventh with one base runner. Coach Newland’s team was down, but never gave up, scoring in unexpected ways in that sixth inning. The Lady Wave is 29-3, and will play in the Regional Finals at Noon, Saturday, at Northmont High School against a yet unnamed opponent. A game Thursday night will decide if Urbana , Wapakoneta, Lima Shawnee or Napoleon will play the Wave next.

  3. congratulations ladies and coach newland. I just wish coach newland would find a better way of standing during the national anthem. Doesn't look very respectful in the above picture standing with your arms folded in front of you.
