In this day and age of the mega-stores, we all complain about customer service and how it used to be. Who hasn’t had the experience of the cashier that doesn’t make eye contact, much less smile. Often they can’t count back change, but instead depend on the computer to tell them how much is owed back to the customer. Try finding someone to assist you in a particular department. Either you get the standard “not my department” or they just tell you they don’t know and wander away.
There are still a few places here in Greenville where customer service counts. Ace Hardware and Eikenberry’s come to mind. At Eikenberry’s you can still get a smile and a “can I help you find something?” They still assist you with carrying your groceries out to your car and will even deliver groceries to the elderly or disabled. Plus, the store isn’t so big that you need to sit down and rest between the front of the store to the back. With the mega-stores, it’s no wonder that they have to have so many shopping scooters.
I don’t think I’ve ever been in Ace Hardware where I haven’t been met by an employee asking if they can assist me. I’m the one sent to the hardware store for a part in the middle of a home improvement project. Often, I have no idea what the part is or what it does, but my husband needs it quick. With my husband in a crawl space waiting, I can run to Ace and be back home in minutes. Ace employees are always so knowledgeable and not only will take me straight to the product, but will usually modify it if I need it. They will cut the pipe to the size I need or open the package and make sure the replacement part is the same as the original part. I’ve also asked the management to match a price on an item I found cheaper at the mega-store and often they can. It never hurts to ask.
Recently, I went to Ace because my Black & Decker weed eater stopped working correctly. I had purchased it a little over a year ago and it did have a two year warranty. But normally, the stores will tell you to contact the manufacturer for the warranty on a product over a year old. Not Ace. They replaced it immediately. Special thanks to Ace employee Bob Reed for his excellent customer service.
I’m just as guilty as everyone else for shopping at the one-stop mega-stores to save a few dollars. But I think it is important that we also support the small local business owners too. At both Eikenberry’s and Ace Hardware, you can run in quickly and grab what you need within minutes and get excellent customer service. Both businesses have sponsored numerous school and community projects to support Greenville. Let’s show them support back by frequenting their stores.
I certainly agree! We need to keep ACE and Eikenberry stores in business. They support our community. Wal-Mart took back tax money that was paid to the Greenville Schools.
ReplyDeleteThis is an excellent, POSITIVE contribution!
ReplyDeleteI too am very frustrated- more and more all the time- at how poor customer service is at most places these days....and I'm not asking for or expecting much-- a simple Thank You or some eye contact would be nice most days! I would think that in this climate of high unemploment, people would be thankful that they have a job, and employers would push harder to IMPROVE things like customer service in order to keep from losing too much of their market share....but that doesn't seem to be the case.
I cannot remember the last time I shopped ACE, but Thank You for giving me a reason to check there first next time! :)
You would take back money that was collected illegally too if it came from your pocket. These Big Box Stores also Donate Locally. Lowes donated to the Camping area Matt Light ownes as well as many others and Wal-Mart helps out with numerous organizations.
ReplyDeleteI work in customer service. Customers should realize that good customer services works both ways. Customers are always in a hurry, late for work, whatever the excuse they can't wait behind 1 or 2 other people with a couple of items, it's always open another lane, can you get me here. Customer patience has gone out the window. I sure don't see any customers screaming for another lane to open at the big mega stores, and golly they got a few extra lanes they could open. So when you encounter an employee that maybe doesn't smile right away, maybe they just had the rude, impatient customer from h***. I appreciate smiling, happy customers, it sure makes my day go a lot better for all people involved.
ReplyDeleteThat might be true-but what kind of "customer service" do you get from Wal-Mart or Lowes? Not much...if any.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget that there are several LOCAL shops in the area that we should all frequent more often..... Ace Hardware in Versailles, Arcanum Hardware, Parties Decor & More, Spencer Landscaping, Flory Landscaping, Richland Gardens, Francis Furniture, Tigereye Design, just to name a few.
I very much appreciate Ace and Eikenberrys. They're both great stores with excellent service. Wish Eiks was still on the north side.
ReplyDeleteI shop Ace and Eikenberry's as well as Krogers, those stores go the extra mile to help.
ReplyDeleteThe people at Ace have bailed me out quite a few times when I wasn't sure what I needed.
We shop the small home town stores when we can. I have to have scooter assistance to do my shopping and a lot of these stores do not have one or it is not charged. I like Kroger's they have a lot of scooters and will even bring it out to my car. K-mart has one, only one, and usually it is in use or has not been charged. I have my own mobile device but I have no way to transport it. Medicare cleared me for a power wheel chair but no way to transport it, and I cannot lift a 300lb. device. I don't mind shopping at Wal-mart since my wife works there. I also know what she has to put up with. Not only with the shoppers but the upper managment. I used to be shocked by some of the stories she'd tell about some shopper or screaming kid. And some of the upper crust are worse than the rude customers. I used to think she was stretching thing but after about 15 year's of hearing and seeing it. I too would have a hard time smiling and being sweet.
ReplyDeletei have never had a problem out of walmart... if they are rude i just give it right back. If they don't want to help people then they should NOT be there and the job should be given to someone who does plain and simple.
ReplyDeleteIt goes both way, lets all try to remember the "golden rule", that said, I do praise the small stores like Ace and Arcanum Hardware, also Sutton's Supermarket in Arcanum. Remember folks, one day when you can't drive to those LARGER stores you'll be glad to have the small friendly stores still in business and greeting you with, "May I help you."
ReplyDeleteSmall stores are nice and it is good to have local ownership. However many times these small stores have higher prices and less choice than large chain stores. I choose to shop where my dollar gets the most bang for a buck. I do not need to go shopping to see a smile or friendly comment.
ReplyDeleteJME....you sound like the type of customer I would hate to wait on in my shop.
