ONE PERSON DEAD FOLLOWING DROWNING

On August 14th, 2010 at approximately 2:56 AM, the Darke County Sheriff's Office received a 9-1-1 in reference to a male who jumped into a private pond and was struggling in the water at 3799 Byrkett Road outside of Greenville . A bystander rescue was attempted but was unsuccessful. Fire and EMS units from Tri-Village Rescue, New Madison Fire Department and Deputies from the Darke County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene. Assistance was requested from the Bradford Fire Department's water rescue team, as well as a dive team from Wayne County, Indiana.

Bradford Fire Department's water rescue team arrived and recovered the body of thirty-four year old John W. Cox of Greenville at approximately 5:10 AM. The victim was found in approximately sixteen feet of water and pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner's investigator. The dive team from Indiana was cancelled.

This investigation is ongoing by the Darke County Sheriff's Office and by the Darke County Coroner's Office.
