VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR BRIDGES TO COLLEGE ADVISING PROGRAM

The Bridges to College program is accepting volunteer applications for its mentoring program for the 2010-11 school year. “Our volunteers work one-on-one with high school juniors and seniors and help them with the career planning and college application process,” said Beth Sears, executive director of Bridges to College, formerly the Darke County College Access Program. Volunteers are needed at both Ansonia and Greenville High Schools.

Bridges to College, a non-profit organization, helps high school students go to college. It offers mentoring, educational programming and scholarships to students at Ansonia and Greenville High School. “Our mentoring program works with many students who will be the first in their families to go to college,” Sears said. “The college search, application and financial aid process can be overwhelming. Our mentors help students and their parents with this process.”

Sears explained that volunteer mentors work with a maximum of six students. The mentor meets with the student about once a month during the school day. Bridges to College offers training and other materials to the mentors. “We are seeking caring, compassionate people who enjoy working with high school students,” Sears said.

Those interested in volunteering for this position must complete an application and a background check. To learn more about the Bridges to College program, please visit its website at www.ohiocan.org\darke, email Beth Sears at bsears@greenville.k12.oh.us or call 548-4188 ext. 896 or 423-2442.
