Is it impossible to be Gay and Christian?
This third session on homosexuality and the Church will happen May 9, 7 P.M. at First United Methodist Church. We will continue our discussion of the role of Scripture. We will study what it says and what it doesn’t say. We will learn the United Methodist Church’s official stance. This will be the end of this series, but not the end of the discussion. Going forward, we will continue to seek God’s will and desire for our lives and for First Church. This conversation is open to the public. Greenville First United Methodist Church is located on the corner of 4th and Sycamore St., across from the library.

Leviticus 18:22 states, "Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable." So this ought to have been a very brief "conversation." It appears some folks are up to editing God's Word again, which is an act that is promised to bring a curse with it. Too bad the world influences the church more than the other way around.
ReplyDeleteFred: Your reference is, of course, accurate, But if you believe that its violation precludes one from being a Christian, shouldn't the violation of any of the other numerous commandments do likewise? Heaven is a very small place, indeed.
ReplyDeleteLeviticus 20:13 goes further: "If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads."
ReplyDeleteSo, if we want to follow the Bible, we better stone them too.
Or, perhaps a better idea might be to study what the whole Bible says and doesn't say, while considering the context in which it was written. Again, all are welcome to come. Just leave your stones at home, please.
Thanks for the Bible verse Fred. I'm sorry you were attacked and insulted for expressing your opinion.
ReplyDeleteBeing in love with a person is a wonderful thing.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out right from wrong with this topic of discussion.
Typical close minded religious responses, how quickly christians are to judge and condemn others all the whilst going against the same God's wishes. Hypocrites.
ReplyDeleteJP's was the only intelligent response.
I viewed the video example on an earlier post of this meeting. The agenda is quite clear. I take issue with a pastor in my community taking this stance. I am much more concerned with a school board member doing so.
ReplyDeleteI'm proud to have a member of my community taking a look at something that others write off as simply 'disgusting'. The fact that the person is already in multiple leadership positions is even better.
ReplyDeleteThe agenda has been clear, that this is real discussion that no one (obviously) wants to have. I proud that my community is open enough to have a dialogue, but am a tad ashamed that this open dialogue is met with disgust, and a general close mindedness of the issue.
you said it Joe ........ agenda
ReplyDeletelol sort of how the church has their own agenda? Once again, hypocrites.

ReplyDeleteThe next time they give your kids a hug, remember their saying " it's for our children"
Maybe BE and I are saying the same thing. If we should stone the homosexuals, shouldn't the same be done to the adulterers and those who dare to work on Sunday? After all, should we not be consistent? This would really be a boost to the two stone suppliers in our area.
ReplyDeleteDisjustice, your ignorance and hate is disgusting. It is bigots like you that spread hate and misery in this world. You sit on here spouting hatred all the while wrapping yourself in the cloak of your religion. You are no worse than any homosexual, in fact I say you are worse because you use religion to hide behind and as a straw man for your narrow mindedness and intolerance. It is the same small minded and ignorant people such as yourself that kept the fear of blacks alive during the early 1900's.
ReplyDeleteIf you truly want to protect the children, start in your own house, ask yourself why pedophile priests were protected by the church, why were they allowed to move about the country re-offending.
I also find it amusing that when you hear about some married politician getting caught in a gay sex scandal, nine times out of ten it is a so called family values conservative that is getting caught.
You and your fellow simpletons toss around terms like family values and protecting the children, all the while teaching them it is perfectly acceptable to hate others for something that is completely out of their control. It is in fact people like you who shouldn't be allowed around children as the world has enough hatred and prejudice in it already, we don't need any more from the dimwits.
Hate runs on both sides of these types of issues...BE, I pray that some day you accept and change the hate which runs inside you and so very clear in your comments. Your constant name calling and continued bashing of religion is a simpleton response to those opposed to your views. Yes, they are frustrating, just as the environmentalist who drives a SUV is. If you hate those who hate, then you have become them.
ReplyDeleteI have attended these discussion and know Joe very well. There is no agenda, simply an opening of a can of worms.
It is not for us to judge people for their sins. God will do that.
ReplyDeleteThe Bible tells that we will be forgiven for our sins if we confess them. Once you confessed your sin you are to stop doing it.
Confess:
* Using the Lord's name in vain. Don't do it any more.
* Drinking wine (fermented beverage), in excess. Don't do it any more.
* Murder. Don't do it any more.
* Stealing. Don't do it any more.
* Man sleeping with a man or a woman sleeping with a woman as they would with a person of the opposite sex, homosexual act. Don't do it any more.
The point is there is another sin made, lieing to the Lord, when you ask for forgivness and turn right around and do it over again.
No where in the bible does it say homosexual act or homosexual. It is merely an interpolation that says the homosexual lifestyle is a sin, not hard fact. So I have to laugh when people say the bible says this, the bible says that. It does no such thing, it is YOUR interpolation that it says that.
ReplyDeleteMan O Man!, LOL,
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree, BE you really need to some therapy.
Yes, the Bible does say that. And the word is "translation," not interpolation. BE and his ilk refuse to acknowledge absolute truth.
ReplyDeleteI hope this much discussion is had at the actual meeting! If you're deadset in your point of view, I'm sure you could help explain it to the people who are still confused.
ReplyDeleteAlso, "Fred", translation is a close synonym to 'interpretation.' when a primary text is translated from one language to another, there is often some interpretation being made, as differing languages do not have a one for one exchange of words and meanings. This is why we have such a difficult time with people quoting the Koran.
Fred, hate to burst your bubble but the bible is not a history book that has been fact checked, it is not absolute truth unless YOU believe it is, there is a difference. I could believe the sky will be green when I wake up in the morning but it doesn't make that true either.
ReplyDeleteAlso, interpolation is the same as translation and interpretation. I'm sorry I used words beyond your vocabulary.
The bible does not mention homosexuality directly, get over it. You believe it does because YOU want it to. That is entirely the problem with the bible, it is so full of proverbs and not actual fact, that the majority of it can be twisted and turned into saying what ever you wish it to. The bible also speaks of talking snakes, so those obviously must be true too since it is in the bible, or do YOU get to pick and choose what is to be taken literally and how?
Leviticus also instructs how we should make offerings to the lord of cattle, goats, pigeons and other creatures (including burning and blood sprinkling), how women are unclean after childbirth (7 days for a male child, and 2 weeks for a female) and menstration, and how to properly purify themselves. It instructs that we should not eat fruit from trees for the first 3 years, wear mixed blend fabrics, and on and on.
ReplyDeleteI had considered forbidding my wife to sit on the furniture or share our bed, lest I also become unclean. I had also considered sprinkling blood on the altar in my church. But then I remembered there is a reason we have Bible study, because not everything is clear and can be taken at face value, especially within the Old Testament.
I commend FUM for being willing to analyze and discuss topics that may not be widely popular.
Well said Carl!
ReplyDeleteBE: you are obviously a moron. Why do you think Soddom and Gomorrah were destroyed? The truth is that the Bible is fact and has been supported by history and checked, so get your facts right before you spout off. "men who lie with men shall not inherit God's Kingdom", hmmm I suppose it's not refering to homosexuals here either, not to mention the other above quoted texts.
