What’s Banding All About?

Have you ever seen a bird with a colored “bracelet” on its leg or heard of someone “banding” a bird and wonder why someone would do that? Please join the Darke County Parks on Saturday, February 4th at 9:00 am, in welcoming Dr. Dave Russell of the Avian Research and Education Institute. Dr. Russell will help us discover what the use of bird banding and how scientists use this popular technique. After our informative lecture, we’ll head to the bird banding station to watch as Dr. Russell bands our local songbirds. The Avian Research and Education Institute (AREI) is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the preservation of avian populations. Their mission is to protect and conserve avian populations through research, education and advocacy. AREI is committed to establishing biological stations that will provide bird banding and environmental education to the public. Space is limited for this extremely popular program, so be sure to pre-register early.

There is a fee of $2 per person. For more information or to pre-register for this program, call the Nature Center at 937.548.0165 or visit our website at www.darkecountyparks.org. Don’t miss this opportunity to see some of our local songbirds up close!
