How do you cook without the modern convenience of a stove or a microwave? This is exactly what local residents gathered together in Shawnee Prairie Preserve’s Log House recently to discover. The attendees were able to experience several of the pioneer tasks first hand as they assisted with churning the cream into butter and doing some food prep prior to cooking over the open hearth. Using a variety of 18th century kitchen utensils and tools, including cooking with the brazier, Dutch ovens and spider skillets, attendees were able to sample some wonderful dishes of onion soup, cheesy biscuits, fresh-churned butter, beef tongue and apple crisp. After just a short example of pioneer living, most were very thankful for their modern way of life!
A huge thanks goes out to Darke County Parks Volunteers Marilyn Robbins, Anna Wetzel, and Rayna Whistler for assisting with the Hearth Cooking on Saturday!
