Greenville Second Graders Visit Local Landmarks

Second graders from Woodland Primary recently enjoyed one of nature’s sweet treats-maple syrup from Shawnee Prairie! Naturalists toured students through the woods, stopping at various stations to demonstrate the process of turning sap into syrup. Here, students are shown visiting the “Sugar Shack”- a steam-filled evaporator room where the sap is boiled for hours to reduce it down to that tasty, maple syrup. Student Talasia Foland stated “The machine was cool because the maple syrup looked like water, but then later it was syrup!”

Students also visited the historic Garst Museum. The museum provided guided tours in which the students explored major exhibits of Annie Oakley, Lowell Thomas, and Zachary Landsdowne. A highlight of the visit was peering through the windows of the “Village” to learn about daily life in the past. Here, students are shown listening to their guide in the military exhibit, where they viewed extensive collections of military uniforms and artifacts spanning from 1812 to the current conflict in Iraq.

After returning from the field trip, second grade student Cameron Clark wrote in his personal narrative, “We learned about Annie Oakley. She could shoot a glass bulb off of her dogs head. That would be scary!”
