New Partnership Made with Darke County Parks

Darke County Parks is excited. Through the hard work of AmeriCorps members and DCP volunteers, many projects for the in-town parks have been completed. For AmeriCorps Service Week they were challenged to pick a site within Darke County and make a difference and they did just that!

Starting at Prairie Ridge on Monday, March 12, litter was collected throughout the entire park and the Wilson Drive fence row (near the Council House) was cleaned of dead trees, fallen limbs, and brush. The day was completed by pruning back overgrowth on the trail and moving several loads of firewood back to Shawnee Prairie Preserve for program use.

On Tuesday morning volunteers joined DCP Volunteer Coordinator on a walk to see all the challenges for the day at Alice Bish. We collected several bags of litter and reopened the walking path along the Greenville Creek. Throughout the day we removed bush honeysuckle, tulip poplar trees and winter creeper along the creek side of the blacktop path. Mid-morning, the clients from Wayne Industries joined the group. The clients assisted in moving cut branches to the other side of the path, along with racking and sweeping the blacktop path. While everyone was busy using loppers or small chainsaws, several individuals from the public were walking during the beautiful weather and enjoying the progress we had made.

Wednesday morning brought the group to Tecumseh Point, where once again the removal of bush honeysuckle and winter creeper took place. We also pruned back overgrowth along the paved path. Throughout the entire day volunteers of all ages collected litter, from pieces of broken glass to cans and other trash. The overlook bench was repainted to cover the graffiti and the foot railing was secured so it will be safer for the public. Tecumseh Point is now renewed for the spring season so you can enjoy the beautiful scene of wildlife on the water while at the confluence of Mud Creek and Greenville Creek.

Once again Darke County Parks would like to thank all of those who volunteered their assistance during this busy week. We greatly appreciate all of your volunteerism and hope to continue this strong partnership for several years to come. If you missed out on this opportunity and would like to join us, please take a couple seconds and give myself, Laura Schwieterman, a call or visit our website at www.darkecountyparks.org and head to the Volunteer Op page where the options are endless.
