Butterfly Day had a great turnout

Butterfly Day at Shawnee Prairie Preserve had a great turn out this year, despite the dreary weather. People and butterflies alike fluttered to the Nature Center to enjoy all of the free, fun activities. As butterfly enthusiasts arrived, they were greeted with an assortment of activities. Children could be found painting pots to plant milkweed, making chain caterpillars, butterfly rings, handprint butterflies and even dressing like an insect. Outside, a tent was filled with many different native butterfly species in which people could go in the tent and see them flying around or feeding on fruit. Many decided to grab a net and pursue butterflies around Shawnee Prairie Preserve, some even caught a few! There were also several informational displays for those interested in learning more about identification of butterflies and butterfly gardening. If you missed out on Butterfly Day this year, be sure to sign up to receive Darke County Parks’ Nature Notes emails or printed newsletter so you can get information on all of our upcoming programs.
