Graeff was a teacher and assistant principal at Arcanum for 28 years, retiring in 1978. He coached basketball, cross country and track, winning state championships in boys basketball and boys track in 1969. He earned the respect of adults and students alike for his motivational skills, work ethic and kind disposition.
“Dick inspired so many young people at Arcanum that we felt it was appropriate to offer a scholarship to a student who exemplifies his characteristics,” said Marilyn. “It’s a permanent legacy that will last forever.”
The Graeffs set up the endowment at the HOPE Foundation of Darke County, which administers about 45 other local scholarships. Any Arcanum varsity athlete in the class of 2013 may apply for the scholarship, with preference going to a student who participated in basketball, cross country or track. Applicants are required to complete the general HOPE Foundation scholarship application, which makes them eligible for not only the Dick Graeff Scholarship, but many other scholarships as well.
