Dick Graeff Family Establishes Scholarship

Arcanum High School seniors are eligible for a new scholarship in memory of Dick Graeff, former Arcanum teacher, coach and administrator who died in May 2012. The scholarship was established by Dick’s wife, Marilyn, and his children, Gretchen (and Terry) Hawk of Tipp City; Lisa (and Ken) Simko of Mentor; and Molly (and Robert) Smart of Clayton.

Graeff was a teacher and assistant principal at Arcanum for 28 years, retiring in 1978. He coached basketball, cross country and track, winning state championships in boys basketball and boys track in 1969. He earned the respect of adults and students alike for his motivational skills, work ethic and kind disposition.

“Dick inspired so many young people at Arcanum that we felt it was appropriate to offer a scholarship to a student who exemplifies his characteristics,” said Marilyn. “It’s a permanent legacy that will last forever.”

The Graeffs set up the endowment at the HOPE Foundation of Darke County, which administers about 45 other local scholarships. Any Arcanum varsity athlete in the class of 2013 may apply for the scholarship, with preference going to a student who participated in basketball, cross country or track. Applicants are required to complete the general HOPE Foundation scholarship application, which makes them eligible for not only the Dick Graeff Scholarship, but many other scholarships as well.

Applications are available from the high school guidance counselor or online at www.hopedarkecounty.com/application.html . Applications are due April 1.

As the community foundation of Darke County, the HOPE Foundation receives, administers and distributes charitable gifts for the benefit of Darke County residents. For information on establishing a fund for a scholarship or community grant, call 548-HOPE or visit HOPE’s website at www.hopedarkecounty.com.
