Greenville High School seniors are encouraged to apply for a special scholarship through the HOPE Foundation of Darke County. The Mandy Green Scholarship Fund will provide one-year scholarships to GHS graduates of the class of 2013. The awards are in memory of Mandy, who was a member of this class until her death at age 10 in 2005. Mandy fought a 4 ½ year battle with Wilm’s Tumor, a rare childhood cancer.
Mandy’s parents, Jesse and Tammy Green, wanted to reward Mandy’s classmates for all the love, support and protection they offered Mandy during her illness. The Greens organized Mandy’s Sunshine 5K Run in Greenville Park for seven years to raise funds for these scholarships, which will be announced at the Greenville High School Awards Program in May. The money will be distributed in February 2014 to provisional recipients who maintain the required grade point average their first semester in college. All GHS students with high school GPA of 2.75 and above are eligible for an award, whether or not they knew Mandy.
Applicants are required to complete the general HOPE Foundation scholarship application, which makes them eligible for not only the Mandy Green Scholarship, but other HOPE scholarships as well. Applications are available from the high school guidance counselor or online at www.hopedarkecounty.com/application.html . Applications are due April 1.
As the community foundation of Darke County, the HOPE Foundation receives, administers and distributes charitable gifts for the benefit of Darke County residents.
