The Piqua Civic Band Begins Takes Their Audience “Around the World in 80 Minutes” The Piqua Civic Band continues its summer concert season on July 9, 2015 at Hance Pavilion under the direction of conductor, Mr. Brett Poling. The band will a non-stop whirlwind tour of the world with great music from England, Austria, Germany, France, and all points in between. Selections will include the Overture from Carmen, a Medley from the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Les Regiments de Sambre et Meuse (better known as Script Ohio), and much more. The band’s guest vocalist for the evening will be Mr. Tom Richard, performing God Bless the U.S.A. Dr. Mike Houser will be the band’s guest clarinet soloist. He will delight the audience with the popular Stranger on the Shore. Bring the entire family out for an evening of music and fun!
Dr. Mike Houser, resident of Piqua, is an adjunct instructor at Edison Community College and Sinclair Community College where he teaches humanities, educational technology, information technology, and business information systems. He also facilitates graduate-level online professional development for educators for PBS TeacherLine. He performs in the Piqua Civic Band, Troy Civic Band, Sidney Civic Band, Greenville Municipal Concert Band, Mystic Winds (woodwind trio), and Quintessential Winds (woodwind quintet). Additionally, he plays in the pit orchestra for Music Warehouse and for various musicals in the area. His post-high school education includes degrees from Capital University, The Ohio State University, University of Maryland, Boston University, and Nova-Southeastern University. He “officially” retired as district computer specialist for DoDEA after 33 years of service overseas and returned to his hometown, Piqua.
Mr. Tom Richard is a frequent guest vocalist with the Piqua Civic Band. He is a 1993 graduate of Lehman Catholic High School. While there, he was a member of the Lehman Show Choir and was a soloist participant in school musicals. He was a three-year member of Harmony ETC, the boys’ quartet. After high school, he trained the Lehman quartet for five years, and he directed three junior high school musicals at Piqua Catholic School. Mr. Richard performed the role of Jesus Christ in Godspell and one of the four lead roles in Forever Plaid at the Dayton Playhouse. He performed in a musical tribute to the Music of John Bucchino in New York City. He often appears as a soloist at weddings, church, and community events. A small business owner, Richards operates Richpak, a sales organization that provides plastic film used in the packaging industry. He resides in Piqua with his wife Katrina and their sons, Joshua and Dominic.
