Disciplinary leave for Darke County's EMA director ... terminated

Darke County Emergency Management Agency director June Mong has been put on a 15-day unpaid disciplinary leave for undisclosed infractions. More info as it is available.

Update: Mong has now been fired. The plot thickens ... why give a suspension - and then terminate the employee?

Update II: a reader claims that Mong resigned. We see little or no distinction between a termination and a resignation under duress. But consider the comment for what it is worth ... Mong may have resigned with disciplinary action imminent.

  1. Wasn't she the person responsible for initiating the Tornado Sirens?

  2. No, the city and villages handle them, the county in most cases can set them off, but only after being authorized by the city or village personel in charge.

  3. The Sheriff's Office nor EMA have the ability to physically activate tornado sirens anywhere in the county. The Greenville City dispatch has access to the City sirens.

(I understand my comments aren't "official", but they would be very easy to validate by making a phone call. This seems to be an ongoing misconception, so it would be nice to see it cleared up.)

  4. What did she do that was so bad that they cant tell us?

  5. Just an FYI - This information is public information. You just have to take the steps to get it. Maybe something for our local media to consider. The public wants to know.

  6. This I do know...I'm glad that I don't work for a company where every employee imfraction (and yes a 15 day suspension is very serious) becomes not only public knowledge, but is front page news, even when it isn't known the violation.

  7. Very true but that's what happens when you work for the "people". Seriously though, what the heck do you do to get a 15 day suspension on a "first" offense???

  8. Must be worse than providing prescription pharmaceuticals to a minor.

  9. Call the County Commissioners office Tuesday and ask, I don't know why they would not answer honestly.
One would think a local paper would report it if they were so inclined to do a little legwork.

  10. re. 9/5 @ 12:34 ...

Your comment was allowed because it is a somewhat relevant point to this story, but your sarcasm is noted. At this point, we are not going to have anymore bashing of the 911 director on this site. If you don't like it that he still has his job, then blame the employer. The 911 director admitted his mistake and is now repaying his debt to society, and part of that debt is to remain employed, which I'm sure is part of his probation.

  11. "unfortunate mistake"; or willfull mis-conduct? Gotta wonder if they are telling it like it is.

  12. Re: 12:34 The comment was not intended to disparage the 911 coordinator, but rather to illuminate one of a number of gross inconsistencies which are largely responsible for the lack of respect now shown to government, law enforcement, and the courts in general.

  13. You talk about lack of respect shown to government, yet when the highest office of the land requests time with our students, our future leaders of the world, how do we respond...negatively, suspectly, politicly...that may also seem to be a gross inconsistency. The bashing of one party or another, is growing wearysome, not to mention, highly ineffective...

  14. To 5:14 Thankfully, it was and is "some" not "we" who are responding in the manner stated to the upcoming address to the students. My point was from a local perspective, but I commend your last statement which is well on target.

  15. It would nice to hear the publics reaction to the offense that was committed. Instead of taking the heat though, our elected officials choose to try to sweep it under the rug. Wouldn't be such an issue but she is scheduled to return to her position.

  16. I think if our elected officials were trying to sweep it under the rug, they wouldn't have made any of this public at all. However, what value is to be gained by giving the public what they have thus far? All it has done is created public doubt, rumors and more questions. I don't believe it was well thought out..

    ReplyDelete
  17. So if her offense is public information why hasn't the good old Greenville Advocate continued with more front page coverage of her offense in detail. They just like to get the community fired up and left hanging.

  18. not very good publicity for our sherriff's dept and ema, darke county has enough problems, i don't think a normal citizen would have been able to do time and work or keep our job...how sad

  19. Where's Steve Baker...he'll get the scoop!

  20. "Steve Baker"? get real, he is an ambulance and fire truck chaser, not a journalist in any sense of the word IMHO.

  21. The Advocate has posted that the reason was falsification of a timesheet and now they have posted she was terminated today.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The key phrase in the Advocates article said "Time cards". Originally they had said she made a misfortunate mistake. Maybe they dug in to it and it wasn't a one time thing.. I think it would make them feel like there would be trust issues in the future... Understandable...

  23. I can glean only from the accounts of this and recent incidents that the lady in question would have fared far better had she been employed by either the County Sheriff or the City Fire Dept.

    ReplyDelete
  24. And now the County is trying to take over Greenville's dispatch center.

    ReplyDelete
  25. to 11:28 ... I see your point. But nothing has ever been proved about the fire dept rumors. And the 911 situation has been argued to death. Regardless of your perspective on those other situations, I think it's a zero tolerance offense when you steal from your employer (which is what I'm assuming 'false timesheets' to be).

    ReplyDelete
  26. To DJ, You are correct. Commentors to this site have been told to request disciplinary records. You cannot request, nor be furnished, that which does not exist. As to the FD rumors (if they are indeed only that) shouldn't a statement be issued? No explanation was given for the fuel-starved fire truck. There should however be a record if locks in the Municipal Bldg. were re-keyed as per the rumor.

  27. Surely, standards are an issue, hopefully our elected officials are following protocols, not feeling...an issue of trust for a reason for termination...not sure if many politicians could pass that test.

  28. I think everyone here sleeps well at night knowing the Sheriffs Office is doing a good job so why are they getting brought up in the EMA mess? It looks to me like they have been getting criminals and lots of drugs off the streets in recent weeks! Why dont some of you blog about the situation at hand, and stop pointing fingers at the people who are protecting you and your families.

  29. re: September 13, 12:55, I agree with you, It's easier for people to come on here and run their mouth, then to do something productive in life.

    ReplyDelete
  30. You folks all sort of missed the point. The EMA director is appointed by the County Commissioners. The sheriff is elected by you. If you don't like the way they do things, run for office, vote for a new sheriff, or request the information so you can write accurately on here and not start nasty rumors. She ripped us all off, you can't tolerate that in public office.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I believe the accurate story is she resigned...not terminated. Lets start by getting that fact straightened out first.

    ReplyDelete
  32. resigned/terminated it is simply political semantics - either way she lost her job and didn't have a choice.

  33. I JUST HOPE EVERYONE CAN THINK OF THE GOOD THAT CAME FROM THIS PERSON!! It is utterly sickining to hear allv of you glass housed living people reacte Maybe if you for one minute put yourselves in these possisions you might see another light. I am sure June would have paid her debt and completed a great service to the community if people could let things lay. June I COMMEND YOU AND YOU HAV?E LEFT LARGE SHOES TO FILL

    ReplyDelete
  34. If everyone is so conserned how things go in the County they should start attending Meetings and asking questions. Elected officials work for you and are paid by you! You have the ability to make more decisions than they do! GET INVOLVED

    ReplyDelete
  35. To September 16, 2009 1:29 PM. I have never stolen from my employer. Maybe thats why I still have a job! If she did lie on her tome cards, then thats stealing. She got what she deserves!

    ReplyDelete
  36. From what I am told, by her and Commissioners, the time sheet was corrected by them, so she did not steal anything, and she did not get paid from the time of leave, nor did she get fired, she resigned.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I attended the commissioners' meeting Monday. I asked about the issue of timesheets. My question was whether the "timesheet issue" was a matter of the EMA director writing down time that she didn't work. The answer was "yes." I further asked if there would be restitution - and Commissioner Rhoades said it was taken out of her last check. I asked if there had been other time sheets in the past - and it seemed to me that the comissioners were washing their hands of it, that there would be no looking backward. However, in addition to the timesheets, the EMA director was also using her county care for personal business (according to the commissioners). Rhoades said she had been warned verbally and in writing.

I think the last commenter is being generous. If the timesheet was "corrected" by seizing part of her final check, that's hardly an innocent thing. And the use of the car, if true, is just as dishonest as stealing. I don't know the EMA director at all, but these are all serious things.

And in my mind there's no distinction between being terminated - and resigning under conditions where your termination is certain.

  38. Let the application process begin....I know one person who would have and someday will make someone a great Emergency Management Director but I think he is better off sticking to his position at the Sheriff's Office until he gets his screw up tucked away behind him
