A few photos on the new Franklin-Monroe K-12 school

These photos don't do justice to the massive scale of the construction. The first photo is the best wide-angle street view. In the bottom photo, you can see the current high school in the background. The new school is being built within a few feet of the current school, in part to preserve the existing gym which is at the west end of the high school.

  1. I don't understand why both FM AND Arcanum are building new schools within a few miles of each other??? Plus, why does FM need such a large school? Grad classes are what, 20-30 people???

  2. Were they supposed to build one school and have both school districts in the same building? It is no different than Ansonia and Mississinawa building two schools. If two school districts with people in each town are willing to pay for new schools then kudos to them for supporting their childrens future. If you want your child to go to school in a crappy building, send them to Greenville.

  3. I have said (for years) that FM and Arcanum should both get over themselves and consolodate. The money it would save both areas would be two-fold, and course offerings, could be extended, additional sports, etc. I was told that years ago it was up to put them together with the new school being in-between the two communities. Arcanum said no unless the school was placed in Arcanum, and the FM area said no to that. Silly for sure - both places do not need a new school this day in age.
Actually, since I'm on a rant, I believe that Darke Co. would be better served if it modeled itself after Indiana in some way. For example, Versailles, Ansonia and Miss. together - Greenville - FM, Arcanum and Tri Village together. 3 schools for the entire county in central locations....much like Indiana and Kentucky. It's not perfect, but those states sure don't have the in-fighting over public education dollars like Ohio does!
By the way, I DO support our local schools, and I did vote yes on the Greenville levy. I just wish that Ohio had a better solution to their public school funding. One way to help it will be to vote Strickland out this November.

  4. kmk-Well said! The community pride may be higher in these ares? Anyway, good for FM!!! GO JETS!

  5. To Anony, DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE YOU THROW AROUND NUMBERS. TO KMK, we never seriously talked about combining. To Jeff I see the benifit of combining. I pay a 3/4 % school tax in addition to seeing my property taxes increase 150% since 2000 when I moved here. I have four children in FM, from 5th to 11th grade and I gladly bear this burden. A community is just that. We have pride, and dedication, and support our students. I really don't care about combining schools. Once a Jet, always a Jet! PS Jeff, kudos on Strickland and add Boehner to the list, its time for Johnny to go. GO JETS

  6. These small schools had their buildings paid for by taxpayers statewide. I believe something like 85% was state funds. Its a lot easier to have pride when the entire state pays the bill. Greenville was offered far less.

  7. I think the hole county needs to consolidate this is 2010 not the 1970s so every body needs to get over them selves and get a long

  8. OK. Let's cry about it! AGAIN-Greenville pride is down and LOTS of people don't like your leaders-THAT IS WHY IT FAILED-Move along. Good for the schhols being built, also. At least I'm seeing growth in Darke co. Maybe Greenville shouldn't be the county seat.

  9. To everyone...Arcanum has asked FM to join and numerous numerous times they have declined. Maybe you should know the facts before commenting.

  10. There is not going to be consolidation in those districts that built new buildings recently, that should have been addressed before they built.

  11. Opinion...for what it's worth, you are right, but only partly. FM would have consolidated, but did want the "new" school to be in Arcanum, and Arcanum did not want to be "in" FM area. Both sides here are guilty of not wanting to let go of their own space and meet in the middle. Understandable, but too bad, really.
Jeff made some good points, but as usual, there are just ya-hoos that get on herer and talk in a civil manner about anything. That's the real shame in all of this school stuff.

  12. Jeff made good points-but his point is mute when there are ALREADY 2 schools! Who cares!? It's done! I think you are all mad because these places have new schools-SAD. It doesn't matter who offered who what-At least they both got their schools built! GOOD FOR BOTH OF THEM

  13. Jeff never said it was bad... he was just suggesting the benefits that WOULD have possibily occured had all of the various districts consolidated. I don't think anyone is "mad" here 4:42, just questioning the basic funding/building of all of these new schools - not only here, but all over the state of Ohio. Chill out, dude.

  14. There are some testy comments here. Look, money is a problem for everybody, even rich people. Those complaining about how much the state kicked in vs Greenville SO WHAT. This means our community leaders cared MORE than yours. Those complaining that FM would not relent or Arcanum wouldn't either SO WHAT. WE BOTH have or will have new schools. You want to complain that the state is screwed up giving us this money? Well look at Washington. Along time ago I asked the moderator to post an article about how Washington, (Congress) paid $604,000 for bottled water in a 3-4 month period. (There was not a single post/comment) John Boehner is proud that he has had no earmarks but John Murtha, (RIP) from PA showered his district in them. What is the right way? I don't know but in Nov. 2011 FM will have a new school and they will be very proud and so will I. If you really want to play the money card, don't look to the state, they have to balane their budget every year. If you want to complain about overspending, go to Washington, they can't be beat.

  15. PS, I'm not mad, just proud as hell!

  16. Alot of these comments sound like they are coming from disgruntled voters from the Greenville City School District. Its not Pitsburgs fault of Arcanums fault. these have been different schools and good rivals for a very long time.. so why should we join schools and get rid of the rivelry? Dont get mad at us for voting yes. Its not going to help you all out in Greenville. and to the first comment its more like 40-50 in each class. GO JETS!!

  17. Yep Jeff, throw out Strickland and get a man that home-schools his children. Nobody has mentioned that Arcanum and FM are the only two schools in Ohio that ever De-consolidated. This is simply over more kids getting to play basketball. But if the people are willing to pay, so be it.

  18. Greenville citizens do care about their schools. BUT the citizens have a right to disagree with how the school board is handling things and managing money.
From what I have seen in other counties that had new schools built in small communities, they have had financial problems maintaining and operating those new buildings.

  19. To all those wanting to throw Strickland out- know your facts. The school funding was decided to be unconstitutional March 24, 1997 during Voinovich's term. Next came Taft, who also did nothing to change the system. This has been going on for over 13 years. Some states also have County School Districts so you only have one superintendent, one supervisor of buses, etc. Save lots of money at the top. That way all the kids in the district receive the same education regardless of tax base. Everyone pays the same and receives the same. I think the Greenville voters are a little resentful because their state tax dollars are building schools for other districts. Those districts have to pony up far less for their schools than what Greenville voters were going to have to pay. I believe that if you have a problem with the way the school board is handling things, you need to address that problem and not take it out on kids who are caught in the middle of adult's petty fights. Vote new members in or run for the board yourself. I think you will find out that it is not as easy as everyone thinks it is.

  20. Arcanum people THINK they are so much better than everyone, has anyone been on the South side of town latly? Maybe the school should have been in the country away from the slums!!

  21. I'm a 60 year old graduate of FM. During my recent visit to Ohio, I toured the old stomping grounds. A lot of good memories are in that school. Sadly though, I can,t see why their tearing it down. It looks better now than what it did back in the 60's. I'd like to get a piece of the building for sentimental value.

  22. What do Arcanum people have to do w/ it? Every town his a south side (sounds like you're from one!) 6:30 is a MORON! LOL

  23. I'm not sure that consolidation is always good. Greenville consolidated with Gettysburg, Wasshington Twp, Greenville Twp. and has numerous other areas outside the City of Greenville. In most cases these people had the8ir taxes lowered and haven't voted for anything for the schools since they have come into the district. Loss of identity is a big thing and not many people care for it. People think that new schools help education and they probalby do, but every district in Darke County consistently beats Greenville in the Ohio Graduation Test, I don't think the building is the problem! Go Jets, Trojans, Tigers, and everyone else that makes it.

  24. Badge 1-Nicely said. We should be happy for those that are doing well. They must be doing SOMETHING right! :)
