Follow-up on the bank scam

From the Darke County Sheriff: The Bank Scams are unfortunately not dying down. The best practice is to HANG UP and DO NOT release any personal information. Our Dispatch Center is being inundated with literally hundreds of phone calls about the scams, and these calls are tying up our phone lines and our dispatchers. You should only contact the Sheriff's Office if you have given out your personal information, so a police report can be filed.

We are aware of the scam and the numbers they are calling from, however most of the calls are originating from overseas. We realize these calls are an inconvenience and we appreciate everyone's patience.

  3. I know they are just indiscriminate crooks, but it seems like Greenville is being hit more than anyone else in the area. I cannot remember the last time I saw on the news another community being hit like this. It seems like Greenville is a focus of the crooks for some reason. Heck, on top of the six calls, my immediate household has taken I took a call at work yesterday.

  4. The best way to stop these calls is to get the warning out. Although most people will smell this as suspicious from a mile away, there are people who will fall for it and share personal information. If these foreign criminals find that their calls to Greenville exchanges aren't fruitful they will move on.

Unfortunately crimes like this as well as cyber crimes will continue to be a problem until countries step up to the plate and work with the international community to stop it. Fortunately, a little common sense in these matters results in virtual immunity to becoming a victim.
