Dear Editor,

The hypocrisy and down-right lies that certain members of the Republican Party are spreading about Senate Bill 5 (now State Issue 2) is nothing short of absurd, cowardly, and greedy. For instance: witness the attack on a 76-year old grandmother, Marlene Quinn, whose appreciation for and support of our firefighters was purposely distorted by the supporters of State Issue 2 (so much so in fact, that the commercial was pulled from the airwaves) and the absurd claim that state workers make 43% more than “the rest of us” (though the only apples-to-apples study of Ohio public employee pay versus private pay, performed by Professor Jeffrey Keefe of Rutgers University, found that Ohio’s public employees are actually undercompensated by 5.9% compared to their private market counterparts).

And then witness the unabashed hypocrisy of State Senator Keith Faber. Faber has held multiple town hall style meetings using scare tactics in an attempt to sway support for Issue 2. This is the same Keith Faber, who along with his Republican cohorts, voted themselves automatic pay raises in 2000 with the passing of HB712, making them the 6th highest paid legislators in the nation! This is the same Keith Faber that cried like a new-born baby in 2009 when fellow legislators introduced HB210, which would have mandated 5% pay decreases for our state legislators (the bill DID NOT pass). This is the same Keith Faber that exempted himself from the provisions of Senate Bill 5/State Issue 2.

Tell Keith Faber and his “comrades” that you’re sick of these pampered, privileged, career politicians. Vote “NO” on State Issue 2 and when given the opportunity, vote these freeloaders out of office.

James Hobbs, Lima

  1. Typical name calling in this letter, no facts just more fear mongering. The sad thing is this person is probably a teacher and has access to children. Truley frightening.

  3. It depends on who you cite as a source. Go here and read this, http://www.dispatch.com/content/downloads/2011/09/BRT-Public-Sector-Comp-Study.pdf

It seems pay wise they are comparable but benifit wise they are not.

  4. 6% of public workers have "pension pickups" in their contracts, and not all of those are 100% picked up.
Not sure why Kasick and Faber keeping harping about that.

  8. Neither side has a monopoly on integrity here. But the anti's are predominantly folks with a selfish interest in defeating this initiative, so they are highly suspect. Vote "yes."

  9. Great to know that Fred has confirmed knowledge that all those opposed have a selfish interest. With his kind of superman knowledge and insight, he can probably solve all the problems in the state without any issues needed.

Fred, if you want to speak for yourself, have at it. But many of us have no interest in this other than fairness and an overall appreciation for the public workers. And we are smart enough to get the facts and see through the hype. Next time, please only speak for yourself.

    Vote No!

  10. Fred and first annonymous, you all need to do some more readying. He is pretty much correct on every issue. You folks are of the opinion that because the governor has said it, it's the truth. Go talk to a firefighter, cop, teacher or state worker. They will echo what he said.

  11. I am a public worker but non union. The union worker works all around me and they look at them selfs as on a higher leval. They get a better deal, pay less for the same benifitts I get. When they complain managment listens because they have a union. When I complain nothing happens. If some thing is not done now, they will suck what little retirement I get way before it's time for me to collect.
Vote yes on issue 2. We need to balance fairness for all public workers.

  12. If you think this governor will keep your retirement intact, you are a fool. He will continue beyond Issue 2 to try and take away people's pay and benefits. After all, the only ones worth their wages work for Lehman Bros. Or use to.

  13. These Republican politicians harp about all the benefits public workers receive from the Ohio Pubkic Employees Retirement Fund and yet they flim-flammed their way into this Retirement Fund years ago. The hypocrisy is why do politicians deserve a retirement or pension fund. Yes, the workers do, but politicians? What we have now are "Career Politicians".
