Current plans mean new jobs for the community
GREENVILLE- The KitchenAid division of Whirlpool in Greenville continues to create opportunity for the local community as project plans for 2012 took another step forward this week in Columbus where the company was approved for state tax credits based on job creation. Whirlpool has already expanded its manufacturing facility during the current year.
On Monday, the Ohio Tax Credit Authority issued a job creation tax credit of 45% over 5 years based on the company's projected hiring in connection with the development of a new product line at the Greenville site. In the agreement with the state, Whirlpool states that the new project should generate 65 new jobs and approximately $2.2 million in additional annual payroll over the next 3 years.
"We are excited at the opportunity to bring back a product that is currently outsourced to Asia. It's not every day that you see companies bring back products that are built in China," said Bill Good, plant leader, Greenville division of Whirlpool.
The agreement also stated that Whirlpool's project would result in about $340,000 in capital expenditure. Later this month, final approval is expected on a $100,000 grant from the state to help offset the costs of Whirlpool's local investment.
"Partnering for Progress was thrilled for the chance to work with the state on incentives for our top employer," stated Darke County Economic Development Director Marc Saluk. "I'm happy to say that the state saw the value in investing back in a company that is always investing in us."
According to Saluk, the State of Ohio was also key in other recent county projects including the retention of The FRAMGroup and the attraction of Continental Carbonic to the county. Overall, the county has secured over $7 million in state incentives for local company projects this year. The incentives extended to Whirlpool will add approximately $188,700 to that total.
"This project also gave the City a chance to work more with local management and to get to know the company better. We're thankful they gave us the chance to work on their behalf," stated Greenville Mayor Mike Bowers.
Whirlpool is the largest employer in Darke County with 900+ employees. Their commitment to the local area has grown over the years with the construction of their current manufacturing site at 1701 KitchenAid Way and the more recent construction of a world-wide distribution center across the street.
